Would it be OK to substitute the 600F grit stage with ungraded 400/800 grit for the "fine" stage? I've never used 400/800 grit before. My current recipe is: Rough 60/90 Medium 120/240 Fine 600F Prepolish Tripoli Polish Cerium oxide and sometimes alumina Thanks, Steve

You might have to run it longer to break down the 400 (coarser grit) in the mix. I learned from a book that called for 60/90, 220, 400, then 600. Most people now use the cheaper mixed grades 60/90, 120/220, 500F (also called 5F and is 500 and finer, with the next broad range being 800 and finer so I assume 5F is 500-just under 800). I commonly ran the 400 until it broke down then added the 600 if the slurry wasn't too thick without washing out.

I have never heard of it let known try it but it sounds like a good idea to me. I use 500 for the "fine" stage and since I run mine in 2 week stages I think the 400/800 might be better prep work for the next stage. My line of thinking is the less work the next stage has to do to remove the scratches the better. I want my rocks to shine a bit before polish that way I know I will get a mirror shine. May I ask where you got the 400/800? I would like to try a batch with it. Dave

Sounds like a plan!
Fine can be 400, 500 600 so 400/800 fits in nicely
