I won a 12" lapidary saw blade, arbor, and pulleys on eBay. I want to make a slab saw with it. Here is a picture of what I won: Any suggestions? I have some ideas of my own, but I'd like to hear from others how you would do it. Thanks! Thom Tapp

P.S. I have a good motor for this saw already.

I want to cut pieces up to about 3-4 inches. I have a trim saw, but thought I could build a saw now and then build a feed for it later. My trim saw only cuts pieces up to 1-3/4 thick.

All you need now is a tank, a lid, a set of heavy guide bars, a table, and some kind of system to roll or slide on the guide bars and a clamp system. Weight feed is really easy to make, automatic feed is a little harder but very doable.
Good luck and show please show us your progress.

I don't know if this would be of any use. It's a set of photos of a large slab saw in bits. May give you some ideas. Click the link tinyurl.com/6rbzrdSimon

Thanks for the input. Simon, those pix help a lot!
Anyone have any pix of homemade slab saws?

You might want to search for a "drop saw". It would be much easier to build.

Do you think this model would work for what I want to do: I think I could build something similar. (But not quite as fancy looking...) Thom

Automatic feed: A cable and a pulley with a small bucket of water (one gallon milk jug) for a counterweight to put a constant pressure on the blade. add or remove a little water to adjust the feed rate. Add a spring for a snubber when the saw cuts through.

That's gravity feed Auto feed is connected to the drive system or has it's own motor. And your right, it is the simplest! Dr Joe .

Here's the link that gets tossed around pretty frequently. I've looked hard at the saw detailed here, and I will eventually be turning an arbor I have laying around into a "good" trim saw based on this link. But I can definitely see how you could make a slab saw based on the same priciples... tomaszewski.net/Kreigh/Minerals/Homemade.shtml
