The reflection on the bottom is me kneeling down taking the pic. On the top you can see my shed door (barn style with the "X")

Amazing shine on that garnet, Randy! But garnet "slab" confuses me. Do garnets "grow" so big to slab them? I knew they are pretty spherical and small.

This would have to be answered by someone else, I don't know much about garnets. It's hard to see in the pic, but this cab is really dark red and translucent. When you grind it, it smells like rotten eggs.

ABSOLUTELY BEAUTIFUL!!! Wow, I would say that was worth the rotten egg smell. That is what I get from one of my tumbles (Lapis). It is so pretty though and will hopefully turn out and be worth the nasty smell. Fran

That is georgous, the red is so dark and the shine is so spectacular that it almost looks like a piece of hematite. Tami

I received about 30 of the findings from "Floydrocks". I haven't seen her on here for a while. 18X25 is my favorite size. This one is tiny, somewhere around 6x9.

Nice job Randy. You definitely got the shine factor working on your cabs! Maybe if Jamie sees this she'll enlighten us on what kind of stone this is. I don't think garnets get large enough to slab.

I'd like to know for sure. I can tell ya one thing, this was the trickiest one to cab so far!! Oh- there's one more thing. Are garnets hard or soft? This was very soft, so soft that I could actually shape it with the pre-polish wheel.

Here it is, Randy: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/GarnetBut the hardness they give in the link above varies pretty much (6 to 7.5). You could have encountered a softer one, Mohs 6 or close. Anyway, putting such a shine on a soft rock is a great work! Adrian
