Always polish the backside first. The glue should come off completely and you may be able to part the two with a thin box knife and warm it up with just hot water, it depends on the glue stick.
Be careful how hot you get the stone (I do Opal and they don't like heat at all), as it may crack. The same goes when taking it off, make sure the stone isn't too cold when you put it in the hot water.
I use dop wax but have had great success with 'Plumber Goop' when the dop pot wasn't hot.

I never thought about a golf tee, you guys are smart, Tony uses the epoxy and melts it off with a knife in hot water, sometimes the stones pop off on the 14,000 and 50,000, so I try to just do it for a few seconds at a time so the stone doesn't get too hot.

Personally I don't polish the backsides of my cabs. I like seeing the difference between the highly polished front and more natural back. Well its that or I'm just too lazy. The jury is still out on that one. ;D

Tony - Any translucent or clear stone, a polished back will affect how the front looks. It'll let more light into or through the cab. (A little different than the facets on the back of a gem stone bouncing light around inside the stone, but close enough.) I lap and polish the back of all of 'em. Rich
