This is how I orient color on material such as Rainbow Obsidian, and others that often get cut wrong and do not show the material to its potential.
Take a bucket of old paint........any color, and set it directly under a bright light source. Hold your material in between the light source and the bucket of paint. Shift the material around until you get the best color showing under direct light. Hold this position and gently lower the material until it is partially submerged in the paint. Voila! You now have a line set that you should follow while cutting in order to get the best color. Just let the paint dry, and slice to your heart's content. Having paint on your rock isnt really a big deal if you plan on cutting the entire chunk at once. However, if you dont want your rocks covered in paint........instead dip the material in water and mark the approx. angle with a pencil/sharpie etc.

Shannon, This is a great idea! It sure makes establishing the best cutting angle easy. Hmmmmmm..... now which rock do I start on? Thanks! Bob

Thanks for the tip. I think I need to grind off the crust on some of my Royal Velvet Obsidian and try it.

Water works too. Dip and mark. Or with a bit of care, spinning the rock on the table with your left hand while the right holds a pencil to it, can be surprisingly accurate.
I like the paint idea, but these are less time consuming and far less messy and smelly.
