I've been cabbing for about a year using the same method. Diamond wheels at 100 and 220, diamond belts at 400,600,1200. Then diamond paste on resin belts for 8k, 14k, and 50k. There are some stones that just don't seem to polish up using this method, specifically anything quartz based. I'm thinking about slowly switching over to all diamond belts and giving up on the paste and resin belts. This costs a lot more money to polish this way but I'm thinking there are benefits such as the rock staying much cooler with the diamond belts. Do you think this is a good idea or is there no real advantage to switching to all diamond belts. Thanks for your opinions.

Tony,
Your set up sure beats mine and your stuff always looks great. I use resin belts and paste. 14K, 50K and 100K
I am just a beginner too, but I have been coming off my 100 diamond wheel early and then going to a 100 belt then 220 belt to get a real smooth shape before I move on. I think it has been giving me a better end shine. john

I've found that if my shine is dull, then I most likely didn't get all the scratches out in the early stages...even at 600. My only guess would be the step between 1200 to 8k is too big a leap? I stop at 3k in between...

Thanks for the opinions. I'm thinking of adding a 3000 grit diamond belt.

Not really. That would be very expensive and way beyond my means.
