Last week I went to the local family owned jewelry store to get my watch battery changed. I got to chatting with the store owner and I walked out with more than I expected........ a bunch of rough gold in quartz to cut into cabs for some of his jewelry pieces. Here is the largest cab. It is about 1" tall. Enjoy! Bob

Steve, No, it doesn't grind messy, in fact it is rather clean. It is a little tricky due to the difference in hardness but a light touch works quite well. I kept looking in the bottom of my grinder for any gold flecks but none were visible. They grind to a powder, I guess. I used a S/C 220 wheel, S/C 220 Expando and a 400 S/C Expando. Polished on my standard carpet wheel with Cerium Oxide. Bob

Thanks Bob. It's not at all like some of the copper type rocks I've played with then. Too bad that you didn't find any Gold flecks. It's probably due to the fact that Gold is so malleable. Steve

That is really pretty and I'm assuming pretty darn rare. You are lucky you get to cab some of it.

A few years ago I made a bola tie for a freind who was getting remarried and her fiancee wouldn't wear a tie and suit. (He was a retired judge, no less!) He did settle on wearing the bola tie though. At the time, I ordered some gold in quartz from the local Sixteen-To-One mine. It has pure white quartz with the gold. The rough is very pricey (and rare!). I paid the full bullion price for the material even though its total gold weight was at most about 40% of the total weight of the rough. This was back when gold was in the $300 per ounce range. I'll post some pictures of the remaining cab and the left over scraps tomorrow (if the c..c..c..cold garage is bearable). Bob
