Howdy,
New to this sort of thing so I figured I should introduce myself. My name is Mel Hixson ( use sabre52 for my handle as that's my E-Bay handle too). I'm a Bi-residential Californian, splitting my time between the town of Ojai where I do raptor rehab work and a ranch near the semi-ghost town of Hornitos in Mariposa county where I mainly rock hunt. It's smack dab in the center of the Sierra Nevada jasper belt and at this location I collect lots of Hornitos Brecciated Jasper, Hornitos, Sierra Primrose, Cosmos, Firefly and other poppy jaspers and other nice stuff. Am an avid tumbler, slabber, cabber etc so this site looks like fun. If I can learn how to post pics here, maybe some of us can do some trades. Have already picked up some good tips from the site so am looking forward to visiting a lot in the future. Anyway, nice talkin to ya'll....Mel

welcome, Sabre52!
what types of raptors are you working with, sounds interesting.
also sounds like you are living somewhere on the outskirts of Rockhound Heaven!
we are a happy bunch on this board, altho we do tend to drool a lot on our keyboards over photos of nice stones,
KD

Howdy Diamond,
Work with a ton of raptors of every variety. I mainly help with the fund raising shows, rehab and release, and caring for and training about 25 school birds which are our avian ambassadors to the general public. Our school birds range from the tiny Kestrels and Merlins to Bald and Golden Eagles. My favorites I work with though are the Peregrines, Great Horned Owls and Barn Owls. These birds seem to almost have personalities and are more fun to work with..Mel

Hi Sabre beautiful birds! We had a Red Tail Hawk living it the pine tree next door. Does sound like you hit it lucky with the jaspers not much around here but limestone.

i was very lucky to visit the Bird of Prey Centre in Gloucester (UK) (near the Forest of Dean) a few years back, it was fascinating. it's got to be a very rewarding working with those amazing creatures.
those birds are smart.
again, welcome to the forum, Mel, post some pics when you get the hang of it.

Hi Mel, Welcome to the forum! Sounds awesome working with the raptors, that's a great thing you do. Sounds like you have some really great jaspers too, how lucky you can find all those different types in one area.

Hi Mel, and welcome. What a place to walk and pick up beauty. Yu actually have that in a lot of your life. Have a friend in Ojai and he loves it there. What a refuge at the ranch. I'm a true novice at this and people here are helpful and lots of fun to rap rocks with. Sal

Wow! That looks like a Mississippi Kite! Didn't know they ranged as far as Ohio now. Saw many while rockhounding in Texas. We have a Black-winged Kite at the center and he's a cutie. Rare to have kites in captivity as they are rather high strung. Didn't even know Mississippis frequented yards. Really cool you have them around!
