Well I had cab visitation and boy did I have better luck. My dop pot from Maryann worked like a charm, no flying cabs. I listened to Tony for more than 2 minutes, and I took John's advice and tried to follow some shapes, TRY being the optimal word there. So here they are, 7 on Saturday, I was worn out. But working with stones sent from friends, and trying to make cabs for friends, certainly helps the work!!!!! Red Jasper for my Mommy: Crazy Lace: I LOVE CRAZY LACE from Tony's stash. Tried to make oval for Builtonrock This was in a box from Builtonrock, and it was my fav freeform of the day, the colors do not show up so well, but I love this one. A Laguna for Steve, reminds me of Christmas!!! Unknown, I am calling Santa Stone for me to wear for Christmas! Unknown from Catman's slabs that was for me to practice, he was right, it was a hard little bugger, and took a nice shine, gave this to naturenut today. This was from local PA material that naturenut sent me. We met today and hiked and rock-hounded, and had a blast. Tony shaped this one, and I shined it from 600 on. I was very pleased to give it to her, we put a gold wire bail on it, ok Tony did the bail, but I picked the color!!!!! Enjoy!!! Amber

I'm pretty sure that's the best piece of Crazy lace that I've ever seen, great job on all!! The third cab looks alot like African brecciated jasper.

:)Wow! You're getting superty-duperty good at this Amber. I think the court should award you full custody ;D I Love that Crazy Lace but I'll be honored to say that the Laguna is my Fav. What is the 3rd one down? I would say this is your best bunch of cabs. The shapes are flawless and what a shine! Thanks for sharing. Steve

Catman- I had fun, but was worn out from 6 hours in the basement at one shot. I think my gift to myself will be a cab machine, then I can work at my leisure and not get too frustrated, but the dop REALLY helped.
WOW Bikerrandy, what a compliment coming from a master!!!!! I am honored. I do love crazylace, it seems to be the easiest to polish and cut, I think all the busy patterns hide the flaws. I got a really nice piece from Steve I might have to try next, was saving it until I got better, but now I feel empowered!!!
Steve- I don't know what some are, maybe someone will know!!! Glad you liked the laguna!!
Tony did upgrade to wet diamond belts up to 8,000 so that is where these ended. No paste this time and I think they are nicer and more shiny.

That is a big step ahead! The contour lines are so nice and smooth, the shine is blinding. I especially like the shapes of the red one for your mom and of the last cab. The other ones are also beautiful.

You have become a shine and shape master! They are all superb and that lace is eye popping!. I envy you that last one since you can find it locally. It is gorgeous and with such a beautiful shape to it.

Hi Amber, Wow those stones are cool! I think this is by far your best work so far, and these stones really zing, you can see just how much fun you had working with them. I have always loved Red Jasper in any form, and the first example is really pretty, but I think that the stone you called "Santa Stone" is also a form of Red Jasper - and that's my favourite of the bunch. I agree that the Mex Lace is a really fine example, I love seeing that stuff and yours is a particularly fine specimen, very nice indeed, I like that Laguna too, those stones are always so pretty - and the shine is often superb. Thanks for sharing your fun, it was lovely to see your cabs coming along, and these are just wonderful examples. Top Job Buddy! You hit a new high with this batch - I will be expecting next time! Cheers, Sparkles.

Amber, Your job has just gotten a whole lot more difficult, because you now have to improve on these excellent cabs! That will take some real work, but I'm confident that you will succeed. Your improvement has been phenomenal! What a shine! What great material! From now on cabbing will be real fun and less drudgery because it looks like you have mastered the fundamentals. So, what's next? Bob

This IS her best batch so far. She really concentrated on shapes and managed to stay outside the lines on the preforms. She has always done very good domes but her shine has improved. She is probably spending more time on each wheel making sure she removed the scratches from the previous. She will get visitation the next 3 weekends so I expect you will be seeing more of her work here soon. Now if we could only cab at the same time.
Steve, she's not getting custody without a court order and a visit from the sheriff. lol

Thanks everybody for the kind words. This time Tony worked a cab at each step to explain what I needed to do. I can't forget my very patient teacher who puts up with my attitude while doing these, ahhahaah. And then I used the mag after each belt and still found scratches after 3000 and had to go back to 400 and redo, which is nasty!!! I think making cabs for others helps the work, it makes me want to try a little harder, so I am next making a cab for Jo's hubby and for Sitnwrap with the local material and for anybody else, hahaha. I am still going to try to focus on a few cabs rather than so many at once , but I see cab machine in my future. I think it would help to cab like an hour a night rather in such long periods where I feel pressured to get so many done. You know the stones being wet are a problem I keep wiping them, but then later I see scratches, how do you guys dry them off well enough to see the scratches before moving on??

Nice cabs, Amber! The crazy lace and Laguna are sweet.
As for drying off the cabs – I use a 100 watt drafting lamp over my wheels. A quick wipe on a towel, then hold the cab up to the bulb for a few seconds . . . dry as a bone! (Also warms your fingers up too.)
Then hold the cab right next to the light when you’re checkin’ for scratches through the loupe. Look at it from a bunch of different angles. If it’s flawless comin’ off the 280 wheel, the rest is easy.
And don’t worry about how many you make. That one perfect cab is more satisfying than fifty you know you could/should/will never get around to making better.
