Last month I had some friends over and their 11 year old son Ben showed a real interest in the rocks and cabbing. So much so that he wanted to give it a try so last week his mother dropped him off and we gave it a shot. I was pretty impressed by his diligence as he sat there for over two hours and really seemed into grinding. I know he enjoyed it because he is already trying to get his father to turn a part of the basement shop into a rock grinding area. Here is Ben at the grinder. Here are the cabs he made. The first is turitella and the second is unknown but it looks similar to green zebra agate that I have. These are pretty darn impressive for his first attempts. We turned both into pendants so he could wear them as necklaces.

I gotta say, this little dude puts me to shame, I could not believe how lovely they were in person. We were at a party and he was quite proud to show off his work, and Tony is so great with kids. It is nice to see young people interested in something other than TV and video games.

Tony: This is a wonderful thing you have done getting a young one interested in the hobby. Many rock clubs in this country have died, or are about to die because they do not work with, and encourage the young ones. This one quite obviously has a great teacher. Woody

Too cool Tony! I tried to get my grandson interested, but he can't sit still that long. He does like to go out and hunt 'em though. Curt

Kid looks like a natural on the machine and his first set of cabs are great. Glad to see kids getting interested in lapidary. Hope to see more of his cabs. And a big 'Thank You' for taking the time to teach him.

Hey, you have your very own Padawan! Tho by the looks of things, you better keep reading a page ahead of him or he'll be teaching you soon (You know your in trouble when he does a full dome cab). I sure he appreciates the time and effort spent, and his Dad will appreciate the name of that cheaper cab machine. Congrats to both of you. Make sure you let him read all these encouraging posts too. Dr Joe .

Hey there, Ben!
I am wholly impressed with your cabs. You did a fantastic job, and I'd be proud to wear them. It's nice when you find a passion for something at a young age, because then your have your whole life ahead of you to learn and work at it. Who knows you may be the Rock Master of the World by the time you're fully grown. I know Tony is really proud of you. Every teacher LOVES an A+ student!
Keep it up, and I'd love to see more of your stuff.
Tony, I think God will bless you for nurturing this young man's love of His creations.
