Do lapidarist have a name for the imperfection in the grinding process? I'm referring to the steps when one dries off the rock and inspects it by a good light for scratches or dips. Or do we just say: there scratches in there still that need to do further work?
In sharpening of tools --knives, scissors, saws ect... the term for a dull spot is called candling. If you inspect the length of knife edge that your sharpening in a good light (sunlight always the best), the unsharpened spots we'll glare out as a dull white luster. That called candling. That's the area that needs further work.
Anyway I was just wondering if there was term for those imperfections?

Lapidaries use the term 'candling' when checking the inside or an agate, especially Montana agate to look for dentrites. To candle an agate, one first wets the agate, then shine an intense light from the back.
As for the scratches, I think everybody just says, yep still have scratches, and goes back till they are gone. Woody

Candling is also a term used to check chicken eggs for fertilization. You hold a light, in the old days candles, to the egg. If there is a dark spot in it, it's fertile, if no dark spot than it was ok to cook and eat.

PS I'm not old enough to have experienced this, saw it on discovery channel, LOL.

There is also ear candling......you stick this rolled up hollow wax tube laced with herbs in your ear and light it and let the smoke go in your ear. I have hearing loss and have tried everything, even that, and I still can't hear!! It is scary with long hair let me tell you, those suckers really burn and have a big flame!!
I always say, damn it another scratch I didn't see until they I am all finished!

Those are nundeskies. Loosely translated from an old far eastern dialect it means :
AW F - - K IT !
Nundeskies come in 3 sizes :
#1. You leave a nice restaurant in your best suit and when you reach your car, you discover that you have a flat tire.
#2. You leave the restaurant in your best suit and it has started to rain ect. ect.
#3. You leave the restaurant in your best suit , it is POURING , and you are parked in the DEEPEST puddle in the lot and find your tire is SOOO flat, it has stopped blowing bubbles, and in your hurry to beat the crowd earlier, you locked your keys in the car !
THAT'S a BIG Nundeskie !
Pardon the rambling, I just spent 8 hours at work today fixing Nundeskies and needed to vent !

Yeahhhhhhhhh, when I find scratches I just use George Carlin's 7 words you cant say on television. Those pretty much cover it. If its a minor scratch, I may just use one or two of his words........if I find a fracture or break a cab, all of them are necessary to make me feel a bit better.

Just spotted an add on T.V. that was made by Simonize Company. It's called ( Fix It ) . It is used for filling scratches and dings in car paint. It comes in a pen like a Magic Marker and is transparent. Looked like one pen held the filler and the other one contained the hardener. It looked like it might have some Lapidary possibilities . The kit comes with 2 pens of each material at a cost of $ 20 bucks. Might be great for filling small cracks and imperfections.
Fix It at ----------- 1-800-709-6251
NO, I don't get a kick-back, it just looked like neat stuff !
