Hey that's pretty neat looking stuff. It reminds me of sagebrush dendritic out of Wyoming. It's kind of a tough one to polish too. Looks like you got a pretty fine shine on your though...Mel

Beautiful polish on the first one and the two with all the dendrites are great. I like the finish as it is because it's the nature of the stone.

Beautiful, I like the dendritic patterns. You put a very good polish on a difficult material.

Yes, different material. Wanting minds want know where you picked it up so please don't keep us in suspense. What are you using for a polishing media? I have some similar material and used diamond paste. Read an article about using a hard wood with diamond paste to polish soft material.

It is just a local mudstone. Its found around Estevan Saskatchewan and it is dentric, so Estevan Dentric Mudstone is the ever so creative name the people collecting it have given it (alright its just me and Brent collecting it so far). It seems like a good enough name in any case. Its not real common I got about 1.5 ice cream buckets of it over all of last summer. I have tried aluminum oxide and cerium oxide. They both do about the same. I put a couple chunks in for Utahrockhound in our obsidian trade, maybe he will have better luck. Here are some pics of more of it.

Wow, I wish I just had some mudstone like that in my neck of the woods. Those cabs and the dentrites are beautiful.

That is pretty stuff and the patterns are great. Hey not all stones shine up like glass and there is nothing wrong with that. A matte finish is attractive too. Indian paint stone doesn't shine up either but it makes some pretty cabs just like yours.

Found a solution to the shine problem today!!! I coated the cab with a thin layer of super glue, let it dry, then polished it off. It Soaked in just enough to harden the surface up so it would take a nice shine.
