Well Mom was getting better, and my 8 year old son, Robert had a snow day! The machine in the basement has been fascinating him so he asked first thing this morning if he could make a cab. He picked out a rock from Texas Woodie's box a few days ago, and has been checking to make sure I had not moved it. So we mixed epoxy and dopped with that, I think the basement is too cold for the dop. Here he is at work, :serious: I was very surprised by how much he was really into it, and very much a perfectionist when checking the dome. He is my best critic, he is always analyzing my cabs telling me which ones are shiny, shaped well, etc. He plugged away for about a good 40 minutes on the first 2 wheels and then said, here Mom finish this!! He kept running back and forth to see if I finished HIS CAB! He wants to take it to school tomorrow to show his friends. I want to think of a way to attach it to his zipper pull on his backpack, so any ideas appreciated!!! The finished product: Here are 3 more that I finished: This poor chrysacolla has been a preform than a free-form 4 times over, it was huge, now it is pretty small!! I love this stuff but it is so soft and my new machine kept eating it!! The red jasper I started and Tony told me it was terrible so I tried to fix it Another idontknowite, I am calling it eraser stone since it looks like half the pattern was erased on one side, I like this one! Pics-Are these better? Now I used the inside of my coffee canister in the basement on the barstool under the light with no flash, I hate the picture part!!!!! :help: :help: That's all !! Mom is tired and cold, and fixing to make dinner!!! Enjoy, I told Robert he could read what people said about his cabbing skills!!!

How exciting that Robert is learning a skill that will stay with him all his life. He did a great job getting that cab started! I am very impressed. Are you sure he is only 8? ;D
Your cabs are very nice, too, Amber, but I think I like Robert's best!! Can't wait to see what else the two of you create!

Man! Robert did a great job at his first cab! For his age, that was a lot of dedication and concentration on this project and you are a great Mom to finish it for him! I know you hate wire wrapping but if you did wrap it, you could loop the back through the zipper on his back pack and it would be there..Just a thought. Fran

Sweet Cabs! I must say I like Bobby's best too. He really picked a winner. I can't believe that he is only 8 either. It amazes me the dedication, patience and skill he put into working that stone. Good Job Bobby! Your cabs are wonderful to Amber. I like that Red Jasper best. That shape is stellar! I can tell the new machine is going to getting alot of use. Steve

Glad to see that mom finally gave him a chance to get to the machine. 40 minutes is pretty impressive and he did a great cab. Robert's mom is making some pretty fine looking cabs too. Nice job sugar.

Way to go Robert. You look like an expert working on that cab and it came out great.
I love all the cabs and the pics are picking up the shine but my favorite is that first one. Amber, that is an awesome idea to use a cab as a zipper pull. You could do this by groove wrapping it only make the groove a little deeper so that the wire is really imbedded in the stone. Before you bind the bail, slip the bail wires through the eye of the zipper (hopefully) it is one that has an eye, or hole, then start the binding of the bail.
If you don't want to make it a permanent zipper pull, you can use jump rings to attach the wrapped cab to the zipper. You may need to use two rings so the cab sits flat.
Boy you are really coming up with great ideas.

Robert looks like being a natural cabber! His cab has such a smooth shape and the dome is also clean and without any flat spot. WTG Robert! He beat his mommy on her first one (that chryssocola) but then you came with some real beauties! I especially like yhat red one, you chose a very original shape and it came out beautifully.
Adrian
PS. As for the pics, two of them are a bit blured, aparently because the movement of the camera whyle taking the pic. (cabs 1 and 3). Maybe the time of exposure was too big, so you need a stronger light or get closer to the light you are using. The "clean" background is great, it doesn't distract the attention from the cabs.

Robert, Very nice work for your first cab. You picked a great piece of material with nice colors. The cab has an excellent dome and the polish looks very good. Good job

cool stuff for a beginner!
as for the zipper pull - Adrian's groove wrap would be your best bet

Glad to see the next generation of lapidaries get their fingers wet shaping their first cab. Yes, chrysacolla has a tendency to be soft if not treated. There seems to be more and more soft stones hitting the market. Other wise they look great. Keep up the great cabbin.

I think it's awesome your son is involved. I've got an 8 year old son and 10 year old daughter. They're both really interested in the tumbling. Can't wait to get them involved even more - say on the Genie which just came today by the way. Zipper idea is great. Or anything to hang from their book bags to show off their handiwork.

That first cab of Robert's is outstanding! Yours are looking great too, Amber! You should make sure Robert keeps that cab. We had a "show and tell" at our rock club meeting a few years back asking for people to bring in their first cabs and the cabs they are making now. I was disappointed because I couldn't find my first cab (although I remember it well), but it was very interesting to see what others brought.
