Oh boy, the cabs are done and I must say that I'm very pleased. Some of these really blow me away. Here's the main part of my shop and me changing wheels, Marking the no-no line one aluminum pencil above the back bevel, Dopping: I clean with acetone and dop with my mini-glue gun. Doming: Hard to get pictures, but this shows the 45 and 60 degree angles. I rough out the 45 on the 40 grit wheel, then finish up the dome on my 80 grit. I feather first on the 80, then again on a 220 Galaxy. Domed cabs Sand/Polish: I use this combo: 220, 280 Nova, 400 belt, 600, 1200 refurbished, 3000 belt, then Optical grade super-cerium on a suede buff. My 3000 grit wheel was making scratches again, so I pulled it off, head-butted it and polished after the 1200 today. Honestly, I can't tell the difference between my cabs polished after the 3000. My finishing station: I use an ultrasonic bath and toothbrush. You can see some slabs I'll be feeding to my expando drum soon. The finished cabs. Priday Plume - the first one is massive for a Priday Horonitas Poppy Jasper Texas Bouquet Teepee Canyon Agate Graveyard Point Regency Rose Botswana Agate Unknown Jasper - this is actually pink/purpleish Apache Picture Rhyolite And finally, one of them set without the pins folded yet, Drifter ;D

Dan, THANKS for the WARNING! I prepared my self with lots of bibs, rags, tissues, towels, spare shirts, and I even placed my dog on my lap for a added protection. ;D MAN...What some jaw-dropping, eye-popping, tongue hanging out of my mouth wagging...CABS! You have shown what an artist and a lapidarist you truly are. There are sooo many HOTTTT cabs there...impossible to choose just one. Love that big Priday, but I also love the Teepee Canyon, Texas Boquet, and Botswana. Thanks for the extra pics and tutorial shots. It helps to see what's really involved. You are really inspiring! Steve

Well, personally I like the dop bouquet! LOL. Do you think it could become the new bridal trend? Oh no, guess not... someone might be knocked unconscious when the bride tosses it. Oh well...
Awesome shop. Killer work.

Best I've seen in sometime. Great job in capturing the scenes (as evidenced in the earlier post).

Wow!!!!!!!!!!!! Those are in a class by themselves. Great V-day presents. I learned something too, I never thought of using a glue gun to dop. How do you take them off?

WOW, what an amazing group of cabs that just blow my socks off. Excellent work and selection of stone to enhance there inner beauty.
One thing I would like to note there Drifter is you shop is too neat which gives the rest of us a bad impression to our better half's. If they saw these picture then we will have to clean up our workshops. Next time post some with a little disorganization...OK.

Wow!!!!!!!!!!!! Those are in a class by themselves. Great V-day presents. I learned something too, I never thought of using a glue gun to dop. How do you take them off? They just peel right off. I like the glue gun because it's quick, easy and non-toxic. The glue bonds really well to some materials and not so well to others. I think it has to do with surface roughness. I leave the gun on and if they pop off, dry and squirt a little more on. They are cured enough to hit the wheels in 1 minute. Larger dop sticks work better.

Which one is for the wife and Mom? Which one is your fav? Which one was the best to work? Amber I haven't decided who gets what yet. I know the pink/red one will go to my wife. I saw her admiring that slab in the shop awhile back. My favorite is the third Priday followed closely by the Texas Bouquet. Usually my pictures show better details than my eyes, but on both of these they look better in person. I think the Poppy Jasper was the easiest to work. It cuts, sands and polishes fast, but not too fast. The Apache Rhyolite cut a bit too fast. Its really hard to hold the oval on soft stones.

Where did you get the mounts? I got the mounts from Rio Grande. They were a little spendy, but very nice.
