I have this piece of tombstone granite its the neighbors actually and she would like the flat polished Its about 7" long & 1" inch wide and fairly smooth now I have flat lap but only a 220 grit lap I think that too rough so I'm thinking elbow grease & honing stone anyone ever polish granite? ideas?

If it needs to be flattened the 220 grit will work fine. If you have a tile place around there are diamond hand pads in various grits for countertop touch up, etc. You could also check automotive paint suppliers for wet/dry sand paper. Countertops are finished with diamond pads in 50, 200, 500, 1000, 2000, and 3000. They sometimes use a white or black polish pad but I don't think it contains a polish. I think it is a finer grit like 8000 or something. Granite usually contains quartz and feldspar and shouldn't be a problem to polish.

thanks john excellent info Its better looking than the photo shows but it could be much better it as some pitting in it i'm cautious of going after I did the honing stone trick & that worked well then I put it on the expandable drum with a cerium oxide belt got a nice gleen to it
