Irrespective of what you do , how you do it, or where you do it, the whiners will still visit. It's what floats their boat If you set up a seperate board, and password entry it, you can guarantee that a whiner will still want the password, so they can go in to see what is happening in there. It's human nature. If the whiners are in minority, do what the politicians do and ignore them. If they want to quit (again) let them. Does it really effect the true balance of the forum? I think not. It seems that more people are joining than are actually leaving.

I don't think you should ban political threads or any threads for that matter. I do agree with you pulling threads that become discriminatory or hurtful.
I joined this board to share my love of rocks and lapidary with others who also share similar interests. It's great to view the diversity of stuff people post from around the country and world. I try to avoid the political stuff, since that's not what I joined this board for. There are plenty of political boards and forums out there full of people who love to argue about that stuff.
"Rockhounds who have been in the hobby for some time, begin to realize that the most Precious gems they have collected are the friends they have made along the way. Some are still in the rough, some are highly polished, and some are dull and colorless Unless viewed in the right light. And like every gemstone in nature, they also have Inclusions sometimes referred to as flaws. If we enjoy them as they are, realizing That their warmth and beauty make up for their imperfections, the flaws become Insignificant and merely marks of individuality." Via Golden Spike News 6/08

The ugliest, most uncivil incidents on this board have had nothing to do with politics.

Would anyone expect an intelligent response to a request for a mineral ID or help with a lapidary tools on a political forum? Of course not. Consequently, it doesn't pay to get bent out of shape over the political views on the rock hound forum. Opinions are like a$$holes: everyone has one and they all stink.

There are a lot of very important things going-on in the world in these troubled times, and who else is more important to discuss these things with than your friends?
I see that the voting is probably going to result in leaving things the way they are. My only suggestion is that if a moderator sees a discussion that seems to be getting out of hand that they post in the thread for participants to keep it civil. If it doesn't stop, lock the thread. Only delete if it's absolutely necessary. Just my opinion.

Great quote HPD. I voted leave it as is and let the moderators handle things as they have been doing.
I would vote this way across the board for any subject.

I agree with with Parfive, who incidentally is perhaps the best political jousting opponent I have ever matched wits with.
If political discussions are banned on this site on the premise that there is something wrong with people having discussions about differing opinions, I would assume that the other sections where people have disagreements will be removed as well.

Banning free speech. Uh heck no! The section is marked and folks should know, after a brief read, what sort of topics are discussed. If ya can't stand the heat, just stay out of the fire and avoid such discussions. Ain't nobody making anybody join in if they don't want to.....Mel

I agree whole heartedly with MichaelJohn ....
If by monitoring threads to ensure the integrity of the original post, then by all means step in and let all know .... kiddies .... keep it civil.
As always Julie
ps .... I still feel it is a shame that anyone has to step in to tell anyone that they are behaving badly. Hello!!!!

mark...i just seen on the news where britain just banned some talk show hosts from airing in britain....because they consider it to be hate speech....i hope we dont end up like that on this board. parfive is correct....a few threads have been much worse....outside of politics....i know im guilty of one at least....maybe 2 in the last few years....i fixed that problem i think ;D. someone mentioned rth as a kinda a news channel....i agree....sometimes we learn a lot here from posts....that we may not have seen in the news....or even opposing views of something we may have seen.....thats what i like about wild discussions....slap me upside the head with with your side of anything ;D. i converse and help....and others help me....from both sides of the fence here....i havent had any bad deals because of political views at all....my son had one about military stuff .....i think more is being made of it.....than what it really is. gray you are right about rich....he is one of the few....that will jump in any discussion and make a point of his view.....and actually make me think about what i think ;D. i also want to know who the GANG is....they have never jumped on me....and i know of no one that a GANG has jumped on. hahaha...oh ya mark...i forgot.....dont ban free speech ;D...kev.

Maybe it's time for this quote, often misattributed to Voltaire:
I disapprove of what you say, but I will defend to the death your right to say it. ---Evelyn Beatrice Hall

I find that in politics and religion almost everyone has rather fixed ideas, emotions and opinions and many often focus a lot of energy on trying to convert others to their beliefs or viewpoints. I feel that life is too short (for me, at least) to focus much time or energy being an attempted convertee or convertor. Maybe if I were much younger and pliable it might be energy well spent. I intend on making the rest of my life richer and fuller learning about lapidary, jewelry, and related subjects. It is rather easy for me to filter political (or religious) rants from wasting my precious life. I say let the ranters proceed. It probably massages their psyche and gives them a warm, fuzzy, comfortable feeling. Bob

History is a voice forever sounding across the centuries the laws of right and wrong. Opinions alter, manners change, creeds rise and fall, but the moral law that is written on the tablets of eternity and on all men's hearts by our Creator will never change.

Off the top of my head on this, I agree with Bobby and HPD and I'm here for the rock fun. If there were to be a dedicated spot for serious debate, then I agree with what MichaelJohn's thinking. There are many other opinions here that have me nodding my head, but I feel that Julie made a valid point. And, I do have a small concern that removing a thread too easily may encourage someone to act as badly as they want, and they can just have it removed with no consequences. RTH, after all is one of the first sites that comes up on a google search, and we are representing RTH, with what we write, to the rest of the world... when you look at it. Just my :2cents: Jo
