I obviously have an addiction but there is no organization to it. Sometimes when I start to organize and put stuff away or clean up I notice a rock and am curious about how it would look inside - so off I go and 3 or 4 hours later I must have workded on various stages of 50 different rocks. This Slabin' and cabin' and tumblin' thing is such a passion but I must have a bazillion things started. Any tips? My corner of the world Not a WorkForce but for $25 it will do MK 225 10" (got it fot $250 w stand) Total Chaos I keep starting preforms because I don't want to change blades "just yet" - maybe just 30 more. Some day I will finish these

if it weren't for the white walls, garage door, and slightly different equipment- I'd swear someone broke into my basement and took those pictures, right down to details like the bucket full of dopped stones, the plastic gold pan and all the glad plastic containers, your mess is a lot like mine ROFL
When you figure out how to organize it- let me know!

Whats the problem? I don't see anything wrong ;D
Maybe you could use a little more room, more rocks and more equipment. At least that is my problem ;D ;D

Welcome to the madness, we have meetings on Tuesdays and Thursdays, lots of free coffee so you can make some more mess when you go home.

Hey, if you can find a rock your lookin' for in 2 minutes, it's not chaos no matter how chaotic looks. Good looking shop! Please don't forget to post pics when you finish some cabs. Adrian

On the off chance that you're actually looking for help, here are my suggestions: 1. Lock up the rough. Commit that you're not going to do anything with it until you finish what you've started. 2. Select one area you want to clean up and spend just 15 minutes doing it. Then select one group of things you want to finish and work on them, but don't undo what you just cleaned up. 3. Repeat step 2 every time you go to your shop. If you take something out, put it back where it belongs when you're done. Quit 5 minutes earlier than you planned so that you can tidy up.
Don't scold yourself for not getting as far as you want. Congratulate yourself for what you did accomplish. You won't get organized over night, but you'll make steady progress. Just keep doing it.
Hope that helps, Chuck

Tall bookshelves and clear plastic bins with lids to put on the shelves. Label the bins with tape and a marker.

Chuck, those are great tips. MJ, that sounds good too. I will post a follow up when I have made some serious progress. Thanks.

Hmmm. Sure looks like my garage. I now park in the driveway come rain, shine, or hurricane. Can't have my rocks flying away in a storm!! I will agree with plastic shoe boxes. I also use peanut butter plastic jars to store small stuff. I'm not really sure that you can be too neat and really enjoy this hobby to it's fullest!!!

Well at least you are properly hydrated and have fresh breath!!!! Some people thrive in chaos, so as long as you are having fun!! I can relate, everytime I get a new rock I want to cab it, so I have enough preforms to last me 20 years, and not enough time! I try to organize since I have limited space! I use baby food jars that are labelled and plastic wash tubs from the dollar store stacked with labels. I have all the ceriums, glues. etc at one place, and I always clean up when I am done, it seems to help the craziness! Sometimes if I don't feel like cabbing, I just work on getting organized, it is fun looking at everything again, and productive! I tend to organize by where the stuff came from, for example if I get a box from Catman, it goes in the Catman bin, I figure that way, I have back up for trying to remember what the material is. When I slice on the WF I put the slices back in the bins, because if I dop them right away I forget who it is from. When I pull out things to slice I put them in a larger bin with a note with which box it came from. Hope this helps a little! Amber

;D The best thing I have found is to buy 6' high chrome plated shelving 5' long from Sam's Club for $80. I then go to the Dollar Store and buy plastic shoe boxes for $1.00 each in lots of 25. I put an index card at the front of the box and put in appropriate rocks. That will go a long way to getting it straight. KEEPING it that way is another story!! My wife has called in for federal assistance since mine is a certified disaster area!!! Do you get good performance from the Inland? I only used one, that was supposed to be a tile saw, and ended up throwing it about 40 yards in a rage.

Thanks for the tips, it sure is fun to hear from the like minded. The Inland swapTop has worked just fine for me. I got it a couple of years years ago. At first it burned out a couple of motors but they replaced them right away at no charge. I made a couple of modifications for the drain and water flow and I have gotten pretty good and free form cabs. I go 60, 120, 170 and then to the tumbler. I just recently picked up a used arbor with a 6" 120 and an 8" expandable drum which I am learning to use. I will post some pix in a few weeks when I finish a few in progress.

I love the pictures. I got a good chuckle from them as well. It was timely as well, because I spent the morning cleaning up one of four different areas that have been taken over by rocks at my house. Most people would look at it and still call it a real mess. At least we are creating "happy" messes.
"Keep on rockin'"
