So if you are finding yourself going "huh?", it's because you need to see it in person (or that I created something that makes no sense at all). LOL. Im gonna use that one Jo LOL You've been busy!!! Of course Im a bit partial to the t-egg but I REALLY like the third one. Great shape and interesting pattern. Good job! Shan

JO: The material from Steve is striking, the green stuff from me is white jade, on last post I made 3 of them, that was from the auction, really like the shape and shine on the 3rd one. Good job! Amber

You are getting a really good shine on your cabs. I really like the shapes on the stones from Randy. Nice work.

Jo, what are you going for with the 3-D shapes? Do you have a specific project in mind? So often when I'm working with cabs I can't decide which face to polish and which to grind down flat so I'm very curious what you do when you decide to maintain all the faces.

10 T: Good question . The 3D shapes come to mind when I look at the blank (fresh off the WF), or when I'm shaping and am grinding out imperfections in the rock. I think that they can be interesting (art pieces) unto themselves with only a simple bail attached. Sometimes I'm thinking of how they could be wrapped and the wirework can work in with the design. For instance, the 10th pic down (third one of MJ's), I'm seeing a piece of wire going across that edge that delineates the two types of surfaces (about 2/3 down the cab). Could be a cool accent. I did one a little while ago that had a yin-yang type of shape. I could see the wire going down the front like a backwards "s" to accent, or, it looks cool as is. Here's the cab: I think I began doing this because my Ameritool cannot do concave outlines, so, contouring the face of the cab, which is pretty easy to do with a flat lap, gives it a more graceful appearance, thus overcoming the straight edge syndrome I felt was limiting me. To answer your question more specifically, at the very beginning I look at my blank. I notice where my eye is drawn, what kind of a visual "feel" the material has (MJ's has a Native American look to it), and then I try to build on that and make it more interesting. Kind of like layering flavors in a recipe. Another example, Amber's beautiful material has a lemon-lime look to it. So I shaped the bottom half like a lemon or a lime and made the "nub" a the bottom left edge that resembles the fruit. You can't see it really in the pic, I should have taken a side view, I guess. There's a long drawn-out answer to your question, LOL. If I sound a little nuts, I guess it's the heat. In a nutshell, and this is a good thing to discuss here on the board (blame it on all the house staging I've been doing lately)... notice what your eye is drawn to in your material and how you can accentuate it and/or build on it to make it more interesting.

I like them very much, especially that third one. It looks like garnets inbuilt in a quartz matrix.

Very nice job Jo and thanks for the explanation of the technique. I love when things are done non-traditionally and the fact that it's done on purpose to add a design element (instead of not on purpose, like a lot of flat edges on my cab domes which require a re-do), makes for a wonderful result.

Thanks everyone! I brought the cab into the foreground to separate it from the background by driving a roofing nail into my wooden work table top. Then set the cab on the nail head. That way I got my focus on the cab and not the fern leaves.

Nice stuff! I'm pretty sure that sixth one next to the Brazilian jasper is Picasso marble. I have a chunk of that material from ebay's Doughboy that looks just like it.

Adrian: Yeah, you are right the dark material has a red tint. Steve NSR and I were discussing and he suggested hematite (without the pic in front of him), but because of the red, I think it's more along your line of thinking. Larry: Thanks for appreciating my method and my madness! 49er, Fishenman, Nate and Fran: Thanks, you guys make me smile! Megalotis: Hmmm, it's possible, although it doesn't feel like marble, very waxy feel when working it. I'll have to ask Randy what it is (usually try to find this stuff out before posting... oh well)
