Spent a bunch of time doing these up today for my Mom. She won a little bottle of opals on a tour in Mexico. She asked me to do them up so some could be put in rings. They are all tiny 6x8 mm. The Mexicans didn't let a lot of really good ones go, only one has much fire. The others don't look too bad though. This is the first time I have cut cabs so small and I'm not sure I would make it a habit.

Geez Sas, you did a good job on those small cabs, I think small is very hard! That's why I make slab cabs! LOL. Still you can't beat an opal, and those look great! Amber

Thanks for the picture and comments about cutting small cabs. Reminds me of the Opals a lady sold me for a few dollars. Did even know I had Opals until I came home to look. I put a light on them man and loop. I guess its beginners luck but what a load of opals.

Nice work. Try backing the translucent ones with black to bring out a little color. Rings shouldn't scream out at you anyway, so you've got some good possibilities. Are you setting them yourself? Don't forget we need pix after they're set too!! Dr Joe .

I think you did a fantastic job with them! Your mom knows your talents and the best part for her will be saying My son did these! They will really be beautiful in rings! Fran

I'm mounting them myself, but not making the mounts. I got 4 of these www.pickyourjewelry.com/index.php?p=catalog&parent=1297&pg=1The idea was one for each woman in my obviously huge family. That would be my Mom, wife, daughter, and sister. Gonna see my mom at the start of September (live in different provinces), thought we could pick stones then. I will have to try the black. Thanks

I hear that opals are very hard to work with as they are so fragile/brittle.
Looks like you had no problems.
Very Nice!

They seemed to cut fine Julie. The matrix on some was real crumbly. I didn't have any with matrix stay togther, but the solid opal ones cut and polished well.
