Does anyone use or has anyone tried using photolumiscent glass as a backing or doublet with agate? I don't cab but I've noticed that some mosses and other agates really come to life when backlit. I would expect the effect to be minimal in a bright room but should kick in when you transition from brighter to dimmer areas. Just a stray thought that popped in my head as I get ready to head to the beach. Maybe too gimmicky. -Carlos

I love all the mystery inside of the agates too. Try one and show us what it looks like. That is how the great masterpieces were created. Thinking outside the box or in this case outside with the rocks:)
Have a good day at the beach.

Ed/stoner did some with mirror backing, but the special mirror glass he used supply dried up.

Lap a piece of sheet glass with 220 grit tell you have a even frost. Then back lite with a bright lamp.
The use three over head lamps.
This the best way to back lite slabs that i`v found.

My wife was always bugging me to come up with a way to back light a plume agate cab so that it wouldn't be like a neon light hanging around your neck, just something subtle but effective. I was in my garage one day and I saw the perfect method sitting in amongst a bunch of clutter on my work bench. I was wanting to either copyright the process or even patent what I came up with before I revealed what it was, but apparently SOMEBODY felt it necessary to reveal it for me, Thank you Daniel! Anyway, the results are subtle, and it doesn't take batteries and it doesn't take much light to be effective. Here are a few of the cabs I've done. In the shade In the sun shade sunlight

There are formulas for silvering mirrors online and they seem simple enough that you don't need to be a McGiver to do it. This should work if you're looking to provide a reflective surface to the backside of a stone. You could even silver thin glass slides used with microscopes.

I've used some regular old Christmas foil in various colors a few time to back cabs in belt buckles. I sold them all so don't have any pics but it was pretty interesting and with screw on bezels, you can change colors if you like. I think I had red, green gold, silver, and blue. I thought some of them were pretty gaudy but other folks liked them, especially the silver and gold behind Indian green moss agate....Mel

..... I was wanting to either copyright the process or even patent what I came up with before I revealed what it was, but apparently SOMEBODY felt it necessary to reveal it for me, Thank you Daniel! ... Wow Ed, you seem upset, though it can be hard to tell from a capitalized SOMBODY, and an odd "thank you" and a frowney emoticon - but a reasonable person sure could read it that way. I think there has been the idea lately that it is OK to mistreat Daniel, and I won't stand for it. If you are actually upset, that is sad to hear, but I make no apology for mentioning something that you publicly posted pictures of on this board a few years ago, nor for making a vague reference to "mirror" without any of the details I observed when you passed pieces around at the Burro Creek trip. All the time on this board we answer questions by mentioning an old post, or someone to check with, or whatever. Are you seriously suggesting carloscinco's question should have been ignored? ... all you had to do was reply with or w/o a pic and say that you don't want to talk about any of the details. ... why you choose to go out of your way to make it seem like I did you some injury is puzzling at best. FYI. You do not have any basis for a patent. (Copyright does not even apply). You have to invent something or develop a new process - not just make a doublet with mirror instead of rock or colored glass. You did not come up with doublets, you did not formulate a new emulsion for mirror backing, you did not invent the special mirror glass you used, you did not even invent a special glue to join the two together. You cannot get a patent for just glueing two common materials together with epoxy. Your best bet is to enter a craftsman of the month contest or write an article, that way maybe you will be remembered as one of the 1st to do it. Anything more is wishful thinking. You might re-read the silly thread about the wanna-get patent on groove wrap crimps.

Your idea is amazing Ed! I had the luck to admire your mirrored cabs in person and they look awesome.
As you kindly asked me, I won't spread your idea anywhere else, even if it was uncovered on this board.
