A neighbor gave me a small rock he has been keeping in his "treasures box" since he was a child. Under the magnifying glass it looks like quartz with possibly pyrite crystals. I've never tried to polish any of the metals. He asked if I could make something for his wife, but I don't want to cut into it if I know in advance it won't polish. The clear crystal part is up in the 6's to 7's on Mohs scale and it doesn't look to be fractured. Any advice? Thanks, Susan

Susan, can you post a pic of it. Though I wouldn't know the answer, I'ld love to see the stone.

Pyrite WILL polish, BUT if it is small pieces, some may fall out (crumble). You may be able to get a face polished on the one you showed. Ken

I would try sanding and polishing a small "window" somewhere on the rock to see how it will polish. We recently found a slab of something similar and it looks like it will polish nicely.

I second the window idea if the neighbor is amenable, I'm betting it will take some polish.

I guess I'll get brave this next weekend. Thanks for the feedback! Susan
