Went to the Austin, Texas show this weekend, managed to pick up 4 nice slabs. Don't know what this is called, but I love it all blue and sparkly. Same stuff only green and sparkly. Nice little tiger-eye slab And a slab he said was "purple jade" .... I guess... Thanks for looking! Sorry, John, I didn't know JSGems was there! Tom

I take it Monk stone is another trade name? Learn something new everyday.

Thanks for the link. I'd never heard it called that before.

Goldstone takes a great shine when cabbed. The tigereye looks like Australian tigereye (Marra Mamba). That stuff makes some sweet cabs as well. I've never had any purple jade, that's cool!

Yes, thanks for the link - I didn't realize it was man-made material. Of course, knowing that fact won't diminish my delight in looking at it and hopefully in working with it. I now have 3 colors of goldstone/monkstone: the basic clay-red, this blue, and this green. I guess one of these days I should probably start cutting it up and see what happens!
Thanks, folks!

Yessir, John, I already have reminders on my calendar to be sure to look in Jan-Feb to see what the dates will be. The Live Oak CC is only about 4 miles from the house, so you can bet I'll be there!
Tom
(PS - the San Antonio show in 2009 was what got me started in this awful, horrible, expensive, delightful addiction in the first place!)

Hey Tom,
I have been cutting and shaping a lot of goldstone lately and it is going beautifully. It is the same hardness as glass though so it will not work with regular stones in your vibe. I am going to throw mine in with a batch ready to polish and see what happens in a few weeks. Fran

You say will not work with regular stones, but your going to throw in with a batch ready to polish??

Fran, I'm guessing that you have a bunch of maybe slag glass and beach glass, and probably some obsidian that are ready for the vibe? I would think those would all work ok with the goldstone preforms, wouldn't they? I'm glad you mentioned it, because I had not even considered yet that it is really a form of glass. I might have ruined a few figuring that out for myself. Tom

MOH- scale for plate glass is 5.0 - 5.2.........
Obsidian hardness is 5.4 - 6.2 ...........
Monk-stone about 5.0, tempered glass is 5.8
Their is a hundred points of hardness between 5.0 - 6.0 ........... and so on

Yes, I have 3 tumblers of glass rolling right now at different stages. I have tested a few pieces of goldstone in them and it has done really well. Now I will get my preforms in with them and see how they do. Fran

2010 San Antonio show is March 20, 21. We were supposed to be there this year but my wife ended up in the hospital the week before so had to cancel. What is the saying, life is what happens when you are busy making plans?
