I went into my garage shop yesterday and was greeted by the foul smell of an electrical fire. I quickly searched around suspecting it was a tumbler motor but discovered that my Lortone 10-inch saw's shut off switch had fried. I should have got a picture of it in place before I replaced it but suffice it to say that the switch had short circuited and the wires burned off. The only thing that saved this from becoming a real fire is the metal box holding the switch. Usually at night before I turn off the lights I go around and make sure all the saws shut off switches are in the completely off position. But I must have forgot the previous night... A replaced the switch with a regular light switch by trimming of the metal mountings. The burned switch: The replacement switch:

I'm glad all that was damaged was the switch, that could have been bad. Nice work replacing it.

Hmmm, sounds like Lortone saw switches are not to be trusted. Glad the mini-fire was contained.

I Have The Gold Lortone ( LS-18 ) And the switch is 44 years old and works like NEW..........
When Lontone split from their old Partner Carbenridudum ( Spelling is wrong ) Look through G & M Mags, Could`t fine the old ads. / Lortone I believe the slit was about 1967-8.
a lot of cheap changes took place, Though the saw`s look the same. ( LS-18 )
Your switch looks like Bake-o -lite case. Very Old. Though i`d bet your saw was light Blue at one time. and some one else change the switch out.

As far as I know the saw is all original. I'm not the original owner. No sign of repainting that I can find and I have bare metal showing inside the saw. I have a QT12 tumbler the same exact color of green. I'm not sure when Lortone switched from the green to the blue.
There is an identical switch on the other side of the auto feed box that turns the auto feed on and off. The switch just snapped into the square hole. You can see the remaining clip on the left side of the switch. The switch is the old bake-o-lite type cheapo. The gear motor is starting to make noise on cold mornings. The bushings are probably gone. When I replace the gear motor I'll probably replace the other switch while I'm at it to be on the safe side.
It was an easy fix. I just cut off the mounting flanges from a regular light switch then drilled holes in the box matching the switch cover mountings and screwed it on the the box. Then drilled a hole through the paddle and made a ring to attach the chain to.

Nice job Rick. For anyone that doesn't know switches have amperage ratings. An under rated switch will heat up and self destruct. There is a reason why some light switches cost $2 and some $15-$20 although the switch handle will look the same. Switches, cords and cord plugs are terrible places to cut costs.
