Two weeks ago I went to the El Dorado County Society gem show to exhibit my case. I also did some shopping. In the bins of rock being sold I spotted this small Montana Agate piece for $1.00 that had been cut on the end across the narrow direction. Unfortunately I didn't take a photo before I slabbed it but you can see in this photo what it looked like on the cut end. I like to cut this material parallel with the color bands instead across them as many people do. It is often cut across the bands because it is easier to grip in the saw clamps. I notched the edges and clamped it so I could cut it parallel to the flat sides. This is what the outer skin looks like. This is all the slabs that I got from it. First, the outer slab. The other side.

OOPS! I hit the post button accidently! Next slab. The other side. Next slab. Other side. Final slab. Other side. I find that these finds are not terribly rare with Montana Agate as long as you are willing to take the extra effort to slab them parallel to the flat sides. Boby

The back of your second slab in your second post has a smiley face in it. They are too cool! I learned something about slabbing Montanas too. Thanks!

A lot hidden in that piece of scarred rock. Great idea to cut it the way you did! I love the results.

That's beautiful Bob! I've been wondering if the cut direction would matter on a few montanas I have. Gonna have to try that too (if I can) on my WF saw. Thanks for sharing.

Now that is a beautiful batch of slabs you cut for just $1 rock. Looks like the cabs will be fantastic! Fran

Nice Montana slabs! Montana agate is one of my favorite agates. I'm sure we will be seeing cabs from one or two of these in the "Creating Cabochons" category. Garry
