Click on the picture and it will take you to the video. It takes a moment to buffer and start.

That first one reminds of ammolite with the interior scales.

Yep, that's us! julie-tom on ebay and also on the lapidary auctionsite 'Dragonsaye Auctions'
Good to hear from you Scott!
Randy, It's rare as hen's teeth. There is a fellow over on dragonsaye auctions, by the name of Emory Coons, 'Coons Lapidary' who has a bit of it listed on the site.
These slabs have quite a history. The guy who orig found the Fire Obsidian at glass buttes, after much prodding, sold a bit of it to John Richardson, "AKA Richardson's Rock Ranch" over in Madras, Oregon back in the early 1990s. John slabbed it up and stashed it in the rockshop. Several years ago, my sister was noodling thru the big dollar-slab trough out in front of Richardson's shop, and dug out a few of these slabs. Richardson said that they had gotten out there by mistake, but he honored the dollar price, and let her have them. GOOD GUY Award, right there.... My sister had been yearning for some material out of my collection, so we did a swap.
It turns up once in awhile like that, but according to most oregon old timers, there never was much of this stuff to begin with. They called it a 'Hat Mine", inferring that you could cover the whole pocket of fire agate with your cowboy hat...

Really spectacular material. I first saw it at a Northwest Federation Show in Medford, Oregon about 25 years ago. It is almost always displayed as a specimen. Last year a friend of mine got some at the Madras show and had me make a cab of it. The cab was a lot less spectacular than the specimen. The color layers are thin and don't lend themselves to being cabbed other than a perfectly flat piece. Even at that it is very directional in the flash of color. The flashes can be very phenominal when they occur, though. Bob

You are right, the videos fall way short of showing the real fire in the material. I scored a couple slabs with the thought of making arrowheads out of them, and, after getting my hands on them, I thought MAYBE NOT ! I think I will save them for display purposes.

I saw that Emory Coons had some slabs of it at the Madras Pow Wow last summer. One slab, maybe 4" x 4" was $2200! I was nervous just picking it up. Garry

EmoryCoons, who is one truely expert knapper also had a fire obsidian point at the Madras Pow wow about five inches long that displayed fire no matter which way you looked at it. The fire in that point leaves me without words to describe it.
After watching the video, I noticed that you have an unusual piece of fire obsidian with more than one layer of fire...most pieces only have one layer. Woody
