I see on my local craigslist there's a 10" saw for sale for $250.00. Here's the add : appleton.craigslist.org/jwl/1411283560.htmlI'm going to e-mail them about it, but don't know anything about these things, as I've only seen one once, and it wasn't running. What are some things to ask about when inquiring about a piece of equipment like this? Does it seem like a decent price? Thanks in advance! Nate

Hey Nate, That is a Lortone 10" saw. The blade is a Star Diamond and if it is not trashed will be one of the best blades you can get. They go here for 300-400 and they seldom last a day or two on Craigslist. Check the bearings, see if they have any play. You can change them pretty easily, but you may have to get the old ones pressed off. I have one of these and it just keeps on going and going and going. Make sure you get that blade with it, that is what makes this saw work so well. This saw doesn't like cheap blades, but will run forever with a good blade.
Good luck on it...................Tony

Oh yeah, if you get this saw, most of them will shut off, but the switch will not completely flip closed. When you open the hood to reset the cut, if you don't finish shutting the switch off you will get an oil bath when you move the carriage. Just one of those quirks with this saw.

still that electrical issue with the auto feed needs to be considered. If the blade is worn, and the propble with the auto-feed is not resolved, then you can ask for a few $$$ off. Also, what about lid? Any cracks?

Thank you Tony, Fran, and Daniel.
I haven't called about it yet. I see it was listed oct 7th, so I'm guessing it's gone. I have been throwing around the idea of building my own slab saw, but this seems like something worth looking at. I will definitely keep this info close if / when I do call.
Does anyone know what could be the electrical issue with the auto feed? Is this a common problem?
Thanks again!
Nate

probably a loose wire or need a new switch, both minor issues. Might be a dickering point though. If it hasn't sold yet, you should be able to get it cheaper, it has been on there long enough he will be ready to get rid of it.

That's exactly what I was thinking about the price Tony. I definitely would dicker on it. I really shouldn't be spending the money on a saw right now, but I can't build one for that, especially if the blade's in good shape. Time to give more plasma LOL! Thanks for the electrical info too.
Nate
Edit : I checked Lortone's website, and they don't list a 10" slab saw. Could this possibly be a 12" only with a 10" blade, or did they make a 10" slab saw at one time?

I would try to get it cheaper, but I think it is worth what they are asking, even if it has a few minor issues. Some people will dicker, some won't.

yes likely loose wire or switch, but if th elittle gear motor is burnt out then it could be $40 bucks to get the exact one that mounts in that enclosure. Cheaper if you can rig a mount for any used/surplus gear motor.

Thanks again Daniel and Tony. I'll see if I can find time this week to call about it.
