I saw a sign the other day, and I am kicking myself for not getting my camera and taking a photo. The sign was one of those you see in people's yards when they have just had a baby. You know, the sign that looks like a stork holding a baby wrapped in swaddling clothes. On the sign is the first and middle name of the new baby. Well, I passed this sign a couple of times and just glanced at the name of the baby without thinking about it too much. But, when I saw it the third time... I had to laugh when I really thought about it. The baby's first name was Claira, spelled exactly as I have it spelled. Now, at this point this is a nice name. It was the middle name that got me to laughing. So... think about it.... what do you suppose the middle name was? I am going to tell you, but those of you who are old enough to know about this name should try to second guess the answer before I tell you. Ready?
Scroll down while you think of a terrible name...
It is really a bad choice.....
Ok... it's "Belle"
Now, for those of you who don't get it, or are too young to know who Claira +Belle, or Clarabell is, she was the clown on the old Howdy Doody show back in the 1950's. What a name to be stuck with! Sooner or later, she will probably be called by the nickname "clown". It makes you wonder if this name was chosen on purpose or if maybe her parents were from a young enough generation that they didn't know who Clarabell the clown was.

I'm forty - and even though I recognize the name Clarabell, Howdy Doody is just an old show I never watched. I think she will be fine with the name. Folks ten years younger than me probably wouldn't even know what Howdy Doody was.
Good catch though.

Yup, I remember Howdy Doody very well Probably the people that she grows up with will never know where it came from.
What about the Texas Governer Jim Hogg that named his two girls.........

Yep - one of the first shows we watched on our first tv when I was a teenager, was Howdy Doody. I remember the song, "It's How-dy Doo-dy time, it's How-dy Doo-dy time!"
In high school, I had a teacher named Bea Pigg. True story.

Amber: funny you should mention Captain Kangaroo... Did you know that three people played the role of Clarabell the Clown at various times? And the first one was none other than Bob Keeshan, who later became Captain Kangaroo.

Wow! All of ya'll must be older than dirt, like me. The first show I ever watchwed on TV was 'The Lone Ranger" we got to watch Howdy Doody every evening after school. I had a crush on Annette. She later did the Beach Blanket series with Frankie Avalon.

<<I had a crush on Annette. She later did the Beach Blanket series with Frankie Avalon.
I remember those Beach Blanket movies. They were notable for the fact that all the women's bathing suits were worn high up the waist so they didn't show...heaven forbid!... their belly buttons. I never did figure out what was supposed to be so sexually stimulating about a belly button...

I'll be quiet about the belly button, but I have issues from when ankles were sexy, so they had to make sure the length went over the ankle. Those victorians musta been a hoot.
I just remember Manfred, he was Tom Terrifics dog..Mighty Manfred the Wonder Dog, on the Captains show.
Anyone listen to XM Radio, lot of great old radio shows, I don't remember any from childhood, born in "45", but fun to listen to., esp Fibber McGee and Molly. XM164.
