My beloved 16 inch HP saw is having problems. It started making all kinds of racket recently, like bolts in a blender. I took off the blade and disconnected the autofeed on it and it still made lots of noise. Looks like the arbor bearings gave out. The arbor is a sealed assembly. Does anyone know if replacement parts are still made for HP saws? What about the possibility of getting it repaired by a machine shop? Has anyone had any luck getting arbors fixed or replaced for HP saws? This saw is my baby and I feel sad knowing it's just sitting there unable to saw a rock. It loves sawing rocks! Please help me! we just machined one ourselves for my HP 10. The old one wore out. Of course it helps that we have access to a machine shop to use I bought 2 new sealed bearings that go into the arbor shaft. Just pop them out and see what you have

You can still get parts for the HP saws from Diamond Pacific. 800 253 2954 They are very slow to ship, though.

When I bought my HP 16, I read on here where Diamond Pacific ended up with a bunch of hp parts. I called Don Depue there and he sent me operating instructions, diagrams and parts list. The parts list was for an 18 in,though.Iordered a guard and it didnt fit,but I should have sent measurements.Ask for Don and he will send you a packet of info.800-253-2954

I would imagine new bearings could be taken out and pressed back in - I've seen this as a popular build for other equipment. Can you post a pictures on the end of the shaft? Looking into the bearing housing?

I have a HP 20" saw that I am using for parts. I can check and see if the arbor off of that one would fit.

Looks like I not completely lost after all *whew*. RH97058, I looked at the arbor and had thought about taking the ends off to get at the bearings, but they are crimped on or . I'd rather not mess with them. I'll call Diamond Pacific tomorrow, then a machine shop here in town if that doesn't work. Thanks for the offer Tony. I'll keep you posted. I'd rather not contribute to the dismantling of a HP saw, but I'll keep you posted. The whole assembly is about 11" long, two inches in diameter, and looks like it has a 3/4 inch shaft. Steve

Steve: First, are you sure this is a Highland Park saw? All the guides on HP saws I have seen are angle bars, plus the arbor mounting does not look the same. With that said, bearings are difficult tp manafacture, always have, so bearings are very much a standard item, easily cross referenced by the number stamped on them to other brands, so pull the bearins out, take them to a company that deals only in bearings (all cities have them) and get new bearings. If, however you are in an out of the way place, you can still do theis via the internet. The last way may take a couple of emails, but will likely cost you less. Woody

Woody - The older Highland park saws had the round rails for a vise slide... Newer saws had the angle iron tipped at a 45 deg. My 20" HP is probably from the 50's and when I bought it, it still has the original leather belt. It has the round slides in it. Love that saw! It's been a no problem work horse for years! Can't say that about the other saws I've owned. A couple weeks ago I picked up a 18" Frantom - Only used it a couple times, but can't wait to see how great this one does.

Jason: Don Depue said my twenty inch Hp is an early one, because it has a 1/2-20 feedscrew, whilst most of the twenty inch saws have a 5/8" feedscrew. Garry's (Mosseyrockhound) bought his 24" in the fifties, and it has angle bar rails. The round ones must really be early. When I bought my HP it too still had the leather drive belt...I got tired of slicing it back together, so replaced it with a vee belt. MY saw has a new feedscrew, and clutch nuts so is running like it is new or something. Woody

I talked to Don too and after looking at photos I sent him, he said it was an older HP saw. The plate on the front says HP so that was my first clue. He said mine is about 50 to 60 years old! So as you can imagine they did not have any replacement parts for it. He was able to tell me about how to get the bearing housing out and remounted once it's repaired. Don was very helpful and knowledgeable. He suggested I take it to a machine shop and told me all about the type of bearings used in HP saws. I called a shop and described it to them. They happily said they could fix it or even make me a whole new one! So next thing is to clean the heck out of it (refer to gunky photo above) and carefully get out the arbor. I figure on marking everything with a scribe, bolting and JB welding the mounts in so they don't move while the arbor is out. Thank you all for your help and putting me in contact with Don. Oh and RH97058, I agree, I love that saw. It's like an old tractor that keeps going and going. (well, until you have to replace the bearings which is understandable after 50+ years). Woody, I think mine has a 1/2 inch feed screw also. Leather drive belt? Wow! Steve

Yeah same here - My old leather belt kept breaking the splice and I tried several times to re-tie it with sturgeon leader... Finally had to bite the bullet and buy a 4L V-Belt for it lol. Like you said though after numerous years, I'd have a few issues as well lol.
