Montana and Idaho (see other thread) are the next two states I'll be requesting images for.
`After these two states, I will be moving over into North and South Dakota.
We are now requesting images of material from the great state of Montana for this thread. The images can be of rough, polished specimens, cabs, or tumbled stones. If you have any that you're willing to share, please post with a brief note on the region and its common name (if it has one.) Credit for the photo will be assigned to your name or online title (or not at all if that's your choice.)
Any material that fits under the heading agate/jasper is welcome to be posted here, even if it is from lesser known locations.
A sample of some of the better known agates/locations we're hoping to have provided are: Dryhead Agate Montana Agate Bear Canyon Tom Miner Wood but it doesn't have to be from these places.
There are many places I've not mentioned that would be readily known to people outside the state. We'd love to see sample of these. If in doubt, POST!

I hope it isn't too late to post to this. I don't have a lot of good pictures but I do have a few of Montana jasper and agate. Jasper with agate vug, from Lewis and Clark County, Montana near Montana City, MT. The area used to be known for jasper collecting however it has been bulldozed to make room for a highway entrance ramp. There is a lot of jasper in the immediate area but not open to collecting right now as far as I know. I was told this was snakeskin agate. It is from Silver Bow County, Butte, Montana. The agate in this particular area is mostly tan to cream colored with darker pieces harder to find. There is very little banding or pattern in it. The rind on it is similar to that of other snakeskin agates I have seen. Petrified wood from Tom Miner Basin, Gallatin County, Montana Gallatin Petrified Forest A permit from the forest service is required to collect petrified wood in this area. This piece was collected more than 30 years ago before permits were required. Hope this adds to the knowledge. Diane

Here are some specimens from White Earth area, Montana. The area is near Canyon Ferry Lake, Lewis and Clark County. Most of the agate in this area is found in small pieces with a lot of it being mostly white chalcedony. Some of it though has amazing colors.

Sadly, many of the pics from earlier posts are gone. However I would say that Bob's cabs should fill the bill quite nicely! (as I extract myself from a pool of drool) They don't get any better than those.
