New Mexico and Oklahoma & Kansas (see other thread) are the next states we'll be requesting images for.
`After these three states, we will be moving over into Kentucky and the states of Louisiana and Mississippi and Missouri. (I need to slow down the posts to catch up...Oregon and Arizona are right around the corner and I'm saving California for the last volume as it's my home state and it is the one state that scares me just for the sheer amount of material I have available for this project!)
We are now requesting images of material from the great states of Oklahoma and Kansas for this thread. The images can be of rough, polished specimens, cabs, or tumbled stones. If you have any that you're willing to share, please post with a brief note on the region and its common name (if it has one.) Credit for the photo will be assigned to your name or online title (or not at all if that's your choice.)
Any material that fits under the heading agate/jasper is welcome to be posted here, even if it is from lesser known locations. Please post general locations along with the images.
There are many places that would be readily known to people outside the state. We'd love to see samples of these. If in doubt, POST!

Rose Agate: Layton Ranch, extreme NE New Mexico just across the border from Oklahoma Sabre52, rockjunquie, rockpickerforever, heh guy's and gal's I have been trying to identify this material. I have sent a piece to aDave, rockjunqie also got a couple including a slab I packed in an auction box, I have seen it a couple times on the net but info is scarce seems to be pretty rare. I have seen it called raise agate jasper, rosebud agate ,an rose agate as sadre52 refers to it here. I had came across an article about this material being mined in the 60's. I cannot find the article nowhere. pretty hard material and takes a beautiful shine . a joy to work with , from what I remember of I think it was said to be blasted and used in landscaping. not to sure any info would be appreciated, any Google search with any of the names here yields littl to no information.

Hi Frank accidentalrockhound !
I was told that this -
is Rosebud Agate (or jasper, or???). You can see the "rosebuds" in it, hence the name. I received a couple of slabs from barclay , which he picked up on a road trip to Utah, I believe. There was a rock shop he had stopped at, he also picked up these as well, and gave them to me.
some Lizardstone and limbcasts.
The only thing I know about the rosebud (or rose) agate is from what Mel had to say. Like you said, not much information online.
Here's an old thread (2007) forum.rocktumblinghobby.com/thread/20607 about it. Unfortunately, PB strikes again - no photos. But the thread does give some location information.
On this thread forum.rocktumblinghobby.com/thread/58969/slabs-bought (links updated!), Mel Sabre52 says "That last red and greenish one is called "Rosebud Agate" though it's not really an agate, more of a jasper or rhyolite. It comes from a site right on the Oklahoma/New Mexico border on the Roberts Ranch out of Kenton, Oklahoma....Mel"
I haven't seen any more of this since it was given to me.
I don't think the green rock you are speaking of that is "blasted and used for landscaping" is rosebud. Maybe Andesite? There is a large scale crushed rock quarry near Barstow, named Brubaker-Mann. This rock is said to have been crushed for landscaping, as well as making little green rocks to put on roofs. This is what it looks like in toto -
We stopped at the location when some RTH members did a field trip to the North Cadys. There's probably a thread of that somewhere, but I'm sure all the photo links need to be updated.
Sorry for the tease, here is the thread of the North Cadys trip, forum.rocktumblinghobby.com/thread/61991/north-cady-mtns-november-15 but y'all will have to give me some time to get the photos back. Page 12 has the info about Brubaker-Mann. Jean

thank you rockpickerforever this material has been driving me nuts ever since the first chunk I got from a cousin that traded me a softball size piece for some apache tears, this rosebud agate?jasper? was what I was referring to that was being blasted and used for landscaping, I had came across an article about the mining operation , with good info and good pictures, but for the life of me I cannot find it again , I will continue the search. rockjunquie hope this helps. thanks again rockpickerforever.
