Ok - Ive seen em - I just need to have a think about them for half an hour or so. (Where to put, how to title etc etc etc.) Soz Im so slow - but Ive seen these threads so no probs. ****** Since we have so many folks that are good with their hands, how about a section all for home built, re designed etc equipment? That way things don't get lost. Lots of great ideas on here, don't wanna lose them ****** ****** Mark, Just wondering what you and the others might think of a section on the board similar to the "no words" area that they have on photo.net. It sorta works like this. Someone will start a new topic such as "cracked". Members will then post photos of items that relate to the subject "cracked". You could start a topic of "blue", members would then post "blue" photos. You don't have to even make comments, just let the photos tell the story. We could put a date in the original post ie "Blue 1-20-06" Just let the topic run for 10 days. The after the 10 days people that posted photos could pull them down and close the topic out, saving hosting space so that they can post in another topic. If anyone is interested, check out the "no words" section over on photonet. It is very interesting. The threads go off in different directions than you would think. Such as "blue" might get a photo of a tumble "gone very bad" not just blue rocks and such. Just thinking there are so many artistic people here, it might be another fun way to see some of their expressions. Bill ****** Mark - i'll get back to it.

good idea guys, but when new sections are made, omit all the replies, just have the facts. if you need to comment on something, go to the general board. takes forever to sort thru all the chit-chat to get to the actual facts. hope i didn't sound 'snippy' here, just trying to give my idea on it. you open a forum about a new rock someone got and before you know it, you're reading about health problems and the weather, etc. i end up staying on this computer for hours and don't get nothin done!!!!

The main thing is if they are going to be used properly or are you wasting your time. We have a photo forum but many times photos get put on the general board instead. We have a Lapidary tips forum ... "for tried and true methods". Why do people keep posting questions there instead of on the general forum? We're a chatty bunch here who genuinely like each other, you're not going to stop people from making comments or remarks, it's just the nature of our friendly group.
Mark, I wish you weren't so worried about moving posts or something. It's not like you'd be acting like Hitler to move a post to the correct forum. AND I don't think the members here would be ticked off if you did move a post to the right forum. Otherwise, why bother having them if you can't do anything to help keep them organized. The more forums you have, the more you need a little structure and guidance. The mods and admins at my forum move posts occasionally, we just pop a pm to the person and let them know it wasn't deleted, just moved into the right forum so it would get the answer it deserves. No one has ever complained.
I have a question on the two most recent forums, the one for Cabochons and the one for Wire Wrapping.
Creating Cabochons A specific section for everything to do with creating Cabs.
Wire Wrapping. A place to get specific about wire wrapping techniques and display results.
So in wire wrapping it's about techinque, how toos and to show pics of the finished products. Is it ok to put pics of Cabs in the cabochon forum to display results or is it just for instruction?
Sorry but this question did come up the other day so I've been wondering.
PS Please don't make me take a time out, I'll be good *smile*

I'm not sure what Mark had in mind, but I think Cab pictures (the actual cab itself) should go into the Cab section (and also possibly in the ID section). When finished wrapping, you should stick a picture of the cab (wrapped up) in the Wire section.
You can also go back to the cab section, and modify your post to say something like "see this cab wrapped here ___link inserted here___"

I'm thinking that the moving of posts requires a lot of monitoring and effort. It's a lot to ask of Mark. Perhaps asking/assigning people to be the administrators of each board and then giving them permission to move posts would work.
I agree, in boards such as the rock ID, conversation is distracting and beside the purpose. PMs or comments in the general discussion area seem more appropriate to me. Perhaps a "Rules about this forum" thread stickied at the top of the forum (with no comments allowed on that particular thread, but allowing comments on other threads within that forum to allow the posting of additional photos or pertinent identifying information).
JMO, but sometimes I get the impression that some people may be posting responses just to increase their status on the board. That can get in the way of the discussion. Sometimes though, it's fun, like in the general discussion area or in the forum on Life & Universe.
I like the home-built equipment idea...maybe a thread in lapidary tips that is stickied to the top? (But then again, I'd "STICKY" so many threads because they are so darned interesting!)

It would be nice to have something to refer to when I finally decide to learn to do cabs & wire wrapping!

Hi Mark, It would be good as when you are refering back to a previous thread it is somewhat difficult ,
There is a lot of links out there that could be tied in ,

I think it's quite simple.
If the header says "How to cut a cab" then that's it.
It's NOT the place for showing your work....period.
If the header says "How to wire wrap",,,,same thing,,,,
I know we get a newbie posting "chit chat" in these sections and that's forgivable but after a person learns his or her way around this site they should use a little common sense and no better then to clutter the "facts" up with their comments, questions and even photo's.
Plain and simple,,,,DO NOT LITTER!!

Too many stickies suck, they get in the way of new threads. Also, too many stickies and no one pays any attention to them. One of the nice things about this forum is how "self monitoring" it is. It's truly one of the best forums I've ever seen for not requiring a lot of maintenance and I believe that's Mark's main purpose. That's also why you don't see a "rules about this forum" stickied anywhere ... self-maintenance, there are no set "rules".
I would hate to see it get too formal as that would take away half of the fun. I just am worried that too many forums will get way too confusing. That's my point about those not posting in the right forum, most of they time they are just tooo confused (newbies in particular). Sometimes you just forget which forum you're in.

I, also, think that to many subforums would be a bit confusing. In my oppinion Wire wrapping subforum is OK, but creating cabochons should go under Lapidary tips. And I think that this RTH fourum is one of the best. Zotika

I like the wire and cab sections, probably because I do both! I think folks just need to post in the proper sections. I am as guilty as anyone of posting outside the thread, a pic in the general area etc... I think we as members could politely suggest to posters that they move their threads to the correct section via a PM, Mark shouldn't have to act as a "boarder" guard! LOL If we all just pay more attention to where we start our threads, the problem will minimize it's self. I agree with Alice on this one, cabs in cabs, wraps in wraps, general pics in pics, an so on. Just my two cents worth... Fatty

and if someone asks a question about something that you know has been talked about before, instead of repeating everything again, just write "SEE ____________ forum'. when i started here, i'd copy important info and paste it into an email labeled Grit, polish, cutting, drilling, etc. it got very confusing very quickly since there were so many varied opinions and so MANY pages to go thru!!! i finally gave up, but i have some pretty good notes saved, and continue to add them as i learn something new.

As a newbie, but one very familiar with 'boards, I thought I'd give my .02 worth.
If members started PMimg me to "kindly" let me know I had misplaced a post, I could see someone getting easily offended. Because you might think you were the only one to send a PM, but you probably weren't. In reality, I would have probably received 8-10 PMs about my misplaced post.
I also don't really mind pics in the general category...and pics in the Member Photographs section. For the most part, the pics in the general category are for identification purposes or just general stuff. The Member Photographs are the final products and staged pics. They fit there.
And I think pics in the wire-wrapping and cabochon sections should be limited to tip instruction. If you have a tip and you want to showcase the final product using that tip, that makes sense. I really like that there's a forum for all the really cool pictures, and that would include the final wire-wrapped cabochons.
But then again, this is just a newbie's opinion.

Not to complain- but I can't keep up with all that is going on now! I'm really busy at work (high speed) so I only get a few minutes there- and I have Dial up at home so it takes for ever just to look at a few picture posts- I think I'm missing a lot already-
