Yeah, that's some fine looking whalebone. Every time I cut a dark looking piece it always just winds up being tan colored on the inside. Nicely replaced cells on your examples too....Mel

Watch that nose to the grindstone thing, don't want to wear away your whole nose...lol. Although if you keep coming up with beauties like these well then grind away...lol.
Those are beautiful.

Geoff outstanding examples of bone is it distinguished by the larger cell structure or more so by the gray/tan color? Great job on all those amazing shapes! Amber

Thanks!! Amber, I think it's the color of cell outlines and then how the outlines contrast with whatever the cells are filled with.

Steve, it can be found along the California coastline. 15-20 million years ago during the Miocene epoch, the land we are on now had already taken shape. The assumption is that it is whale bone but there were other marine mammals swimming around so, it could be dolphin or porpoise.
The prime collecting locations are the Santa Barbara county coastline where it erodes from the cliff-sides. I actually got this piece when I bought a flat-rate box of "grandpas" rock collection that was found in their garage.
