Place: Wal-Mart Place within the place: Check out line. How is the line moving? Decent pace. Until: The person in front of me gets to the cashier. She has: A cart full of groceries. And then: She pulls out........COUPONS! All the while: Each coupon is scanned. And I: Smile politely because that's the kind of rockhound I am. But: I am grrrring on the inside hoping that her check will bounce. My plan: To bring as many coupons as I can next time I do some serious grocery shopping, pull them out just as I get to the cashier, look at the person behind me who has a look of disgust and say to him or her....."Just Kidding," then throw them away. Soooo: Who's the winner here? She saved some bucks and I didn't. I was grrrred and she wasn't.

Next time, just grab the coupons out of her hand and give her a $5 bill and tell her to shoo! Everybody in line will probably applaud.

Times are tough. I like the little old lady or man in front of the line that has to dig for 3 pennies and has a nickel in his or her hand. Grrr. Ken

I'm sorry, but my wife can take 25-40% off the grocery bill using coupons. I can't complain about someone else using them.........

Me either. Finding coupons in the paper, through the mail, and online is a sport for my wife. More power to her.

When you're serious about coupons, the savings can really add up. Of course, if you don't have the ability to discriminate, you can end up buying alot of things you normally wouldn't... so sometimes savings can be deceiving. I've also found that a leading brand with a coupon can still cost more than a generic store-brand. Gotta be a math whiz to make the right decisions these days...

Another way they trick folks is with the 'Family-Size' items. Whether they be crackers, chips, beans, or whatever. You always have to look at the cost per unit. Sometimes the bigger size is more economical, and and sometimes the smaller is. Very deceptive...

My luck with grocery shopping is that often the lady in front of me has 4 or 5 items that won't scan and the cashier calls for price checks, which take forever. Then, when the total is finally reached, the shopper starts looking through her suitcase-sized purse for the checkbook, only finding it after finding everything else but the kitchen sink! I often arrive home with thawed TV dinners, melted ice cream, etc.

Todd, did you ever notice that the units sometimes change so you can't readily do the math in your head? An example is paper towels. Some are by the sheet, and some are by the square yard. So, in order to compare apples to apples, you have to find the total square feet, then figure how many sheets per square yard. Then use that as a multiplier for the cost per unit that's shown. Gheesh... by that time, you're brain is in knots. Causes shoppers to have to guess which product is the best buy.

Rockmanken, I may be that little old lady! Sometimes a person just needs to unload those danged pennies.

I did notice that, Jo. That's why Jan does the shopping.

This is funny. I don't mind people using coupons to save a few bucks. I get the grrr feeling when somebody buys 20 to 30 dollars worth of groceries and pays for it using only coins. Good thing that happens rarely. The other thing that gets me is when somebody is buying candy, chips and soda then they try to pay with a welfare card and find they don't have enough money on it so they start removing items one at a time to get down to their budget. When this happen I just move to another line because it takes these people forever to get their act together.

whatever line i get in, it immediately slows down in proportion to the adjacent lines.
my grr moment is the in the "less than 7 items" aisle behind a person (and there are an astonishing number of them!) that apparently cannot count. and then write a check in the "cash only" fast lane.
i only use coupons for items i would normally purchase anyway. this cuts way down on the actual number of coupons i redeem.
another grr moment is when the cashier bounces my carefully selected fruit down the automated conveyor belt where it begins to tumble against the canned goods for a good few seconds ensuring a completely bruised apple/peach/etc. and they give you that "what are you going to do about it" look just to piss you off. i think they think they get extra points for that or something.
thank you, Condor, for letting me rant.

My moment comes when I draw a cashier that CANNOT count the change due back, EVEN with the amount on the screen right in front of their face ! The wife does NOT like going to Wall-Mart with me because that is where I run into these people most often. I usually hold up the line on this one ,but, I usually turn to the people behind me and say SORRY but this person is handling YOUR money NEXT !

I ran into that at a DQ once. Power was out so she didn't have the register to calculate the difference for her. But still, it is basic subtraction. After a long pause of her looking blankly into her drawer, I told her what the change was. She snapped, "I know". At least she counted it out right.
