I had to take a break from spring yard cleanup this weekend and spend some quality time at McKay Head. Laura asks, “Why do you keep going back to the same old place?” to which I reply “Because I haven’t grow tired of the low hanging fruit.” For only a 1.5-hour drive, McKay Head and Partridge Island offer up some fine low hanging fruit. I managed to lug about 75 pieces off the beach. Here’s my favourite 10 of the ones sampled last night. I promise to go somewhere new soon, once it is warm enough to camp. But, it’s Day Trips for a little while longer. Enjoy the low hanging fruit. Darryl. Mould on the Mustard Agate – Characteristic yellows of McKay Head with some green moss. Characteristic yellows of McKay Head. Red and green moss. Characteristic yellows of McKay Head Red and green set in bluish glass. Moss? Plume? Agatized Jasper? It’s just a bloody mess, isn’t it? Some of the material nearing the contact zone gets all messed up from partial metamorphic re-melting. Mackerel Agate – The photo doesn’t show it, but when backlight it has the black, blues and dark greens of a mackerel. Clinks like glass. Bloody Mackerel Agate – What isn’t brilliant red is translucent mackerel similar to above. First Runner Up - Beautifully translucent and it clinks like glass, but has a few fractures. Best in Show – The pink and blue areas are beautifully translucent and it clinks like glass. It’s a keeper if it doesn’t blow apart at the seams.

Amongst all the fine samples here, I really love the mustard, Darryl! You just don't see that color much.

Wow, those are all beautiful. Such vibrant colors. I wish I could take one of those day trips. That moss plume jasper mess is my favorite, bet all that material makes some beautiful cabs or even a few specimen pieces. I would be going back to that area again and again too, got to love low hanging fruit. ;D

Those are so cool Darryl! I think that mackerel one looks great! I bet the flash is fantastic! It really looks like labradorite to me. Fran
