I saw the protests in Arizona against the new law to address the illegal immigrant problem. Noting that there will be protests from both sides on any issue, I thought I would throw this out there.
I am planning to move to Arizona in the future. If I don't have my immigration status papers, I would expect to be in trouble. I can't see why anyone would want illegals in the country. When my wife moved to Canada, we always made sure that all her paperwork was available.
When illegals show up in Canada, they are locked up untill there status can be determined.

Sounds like a reasonable law to me too. Especially, since the US government refuses to protect our borders or enforce existing immigration law and folks in many states are being forced to see their safety and standard of living suffer as a result of this malfeasance by the feds. I understand Texas is considering passage of a similar law too and it's about time. I like the idea of protests too. They get a bunch of illegals all in one spot breaking laws so it's easy to round them up and check those IDs *L*...Mel

Good points Brent. Although if they locked up all the illegals in some parts of the country there'd be no one left. lol

At least getting rid of many of them will get the healthcare cost to drop. Every time they get a sore throat they go to the emergency room for incredibly costly (and free to them) treatment. This is bankrupting many county public hospitals. It is a federal law that prevents the hospital emergency rooms from turning them away! Bob

That is true Brent. But you forgot to add. Once caught, they get procesed and released. And then they get a deportation hearing. That could take 4 or 5 years to complete. More if they appeal. Mean while they don't have work. they get welfare and free meds. So it your an illegal in Canada you are on a holiday complements of us tax payers. Hats off to AZ.

I lived in Arizona for a year-hated it!!! I think the new law is tops and should be enforced to the T! Why the uproar,if your legal, your safe,if not,get out of our country!!!! More states need to jump on this law,I think it will work.

enforcement does seem to be the key here. what i don't understand about the indignant protests to the law is that legal immigrants (i.e. those with a green card) have always (legally) been required to carry their green card by the Federal Government. and as far as i know, had to produce such documents upon demand of legal authorities. that was what was in the fine print on my husband's green card, anyway.
i expect to show "my papers" to the nice policeman when he stops me and asks politely for them. i expect to hand over my passport for inspection every time i cross a border into another country.
so why is everyone howling that this is discriminatory? AZ has a huge problem and needs to protect the legal citizens, immigrants and tourists that have entered this country legally. obvioulsy enforcing a border is a daunting task, so you have to find other tools to aid the problem.
my 2 cents, anyway.

As far as paper work goes, I believe the bar code on a persons drivers license will give ALL the information a law enforcement officer needs. In case a person doesn't have or cannot GET a license, an I.D. card can be obtained from your licensing dept.
NO PROBLEM !

Northern Virginia's been doing it for a couple of years. The county partnered with the federal government under the 287(g) program, which allows local law enforcement officials to enforce certain immigration laws.
Prince William's original proposal was so sweeping that it asked county officials if it would be possible to keep illegal immigrants off county roads and away from the county Web site.
County supervisors scaled back the measure, voting in October 2007 to direct police officers to check the residency status of crime suspects if they had probable cause to believe they were in the country illegally.
In 2008, the policy was changed to require officers to check the status of everyone arrested.
Loudoun also participates in 287(g), as well as the federal Secure Communities program, which Sheriff Stephen O. Simspon said he prefers because it runs fingerprints of everyone arrested through biometric immigration records held by the Department of Homeland Security and FBI criminal records.
Virginia Gov. Bob McDonnell campaigned last year on expanding the 287(g) program statewide. The administration is "reviewing our options" on the program, said spokeswoman Stacey Johnson.
Fairfax County, aided by Secure Communities, has turned over more than 1,200 suspected illegal immigrants to ICE in the last year.www.washingtonexaminer.com/local/No_-Va_-enforces-immigration-as-Arizona-rages-92335879.html

Heck, as understand it, the new Arizona law is not much different from federal laws on immigration. Only difference is, the worthless feds won't enforce their laws. Seems like the government is real big on writing and enforcing laws we don't want enforced and not enforcing laws in existence we do want enforced. And this bunch of jerks is supposed to work for us....Mel

Mel,
They can't see the border from atop the White House.
Our director of Homeland Security used to be the Governor of Arizona, who, while she was in office said our borders were tighter than they had ever been. This while thousands crossed into just Arizona, A DAY. Now, Napolitano (again the US Director of Homeland Security) or our President do not acknowledge letters from the now Governor Brewer who is sending up the red flag and getting flak for being SO non politically correct. Political correctness has gotten in the way of logic and reality.
What is, and has always been, the first thing a police officer asks to see when you are stopped? "May I see your driver's license please?"
Done, proof of citizenship over, unless your license is in black and white and looks like it was just photocopied at Kinko's there is no issue. Green card, Visa, same thing.

Heck, Napolitano is still claiming the Arizona borders are just fine and tighter than ever. Guess if you lie to yourself often enough you actually begin to believe it. Makes me feel real secure that someone that ignorant or incompetent is in charge of homeland security....Mel

Since San Fransisco is a sanctuary city and is boycotting AZ, the Governor of AZ should immediately start giving vouchers for a free bus ride to SF for any illegal.

I'm glad Arizona passed this. I just wish other states would follow suit. Maybe they are waiting to see if the law will stand up against the protests and such. Wonder if SF would be against AZ if that happened, Curt? I'll bet not.

Wow that plan is pure genius! I'm not sure it would bother San Franciscans though, I was raised in the Bay Area and San Francisco, while a beautiful city, is an off the scale weird place right up there with West Hollywood which is also boycotting Arizona. Hey, how about vouchers to any California amnesty city. That way Arizona could spread the cheer around....Mel

Thanks for the link wycked. Definitely material worth reading. My friend sent me a link I thought you might find interesting. It's on the subject of immigration but also talks about the push towards uniting Canada, US, and Mexico as one. michellemalkin.com/
