This is an outrage. www.myfoxphoenix.com/dpp/news/local/pinal-co-deputy-shot-4-30-2010We just spent a week in southern Arizona. Everywhere we went we asked about camping, and everyone told us it was a bad idea. People are afraid to do something as American as go camping... IN AMERICA! When we were in Bisbee, after the rancher in Douglas was killed by Illegals, they interviewed another rancher who said he sees crossers by the hundreds walking across his property a day. This trip was eye opening. It also made us very angry as we don't see the problem in the North. Just like the politicians don't see the problem in Washington D.C. What AZ Governor Jan Brewer is doing is a step in the right direction. Alarmists will paint pictures of Stormtroopers yanking people off the streets and demanding their papers, give me an f'ing break. It is hysteria. The deputy that was just shot an hour ago is hanging on by a thread. Those who pray please do, and those who don't please send some good vibes southern Arizona way.

I can understand now about the right to be armed. In the border states, it may be a must have. Next winter I will bring down some snow to place at the border. That should scare the illegals...lol.

I bet if a few border jumpers got shot, they would think twice about crossing, or, pick them up with helocopters and drop them back in Mexico, but forget to land first.

if one "routinely patrols" a well-known drug corridor I suspect one might eventually run into trouble. I would like to see us tighten our borders, not just because a few grape pickers cross over every year, but because the craziness of the Drug cartels is headed our way. Some of this could be eliminated by the "legalization" and "control" of currently illegal substances. I am conflicted over the AZ law. I dislike seeing more and more of our freedoms minimized. I don't see people as "us" and "them". What happens to "them" today will happen to "us" tomorrow. The observation has been made that the "illegals" will be leaving AZ in droves and heading to NM. *sigh* I'm thinking of moving to New Zealand, which I have heard, is much as the USA was 50 years ago. Susan,
Decriminalization of Marijuana in this state would indeed lighten the drug trade. Let's not forget, they are trying to get up to Phoenix for the east/west trafficking.
That is the only thing I have seen California do right is the step towards leisure use of pot. Let's not kid ourselves with medical use.
I have worked with the "grape pickers" in California. They are good folks, but long gone are the days of that jovial Mexican fellow in my opinion. Now they are carrying Kalashnikovs.

It's scary, Mike
I used to rockhound and camp alone in the far SE corner of AZ and also in the Hatch area of NM...no more.

Why have anything illegal at all then?! I've know too many potheads that at the bottom of the scale are just useless and at the top end are completely dangerous! These are not exaggerations either! It's DOPE!!! plain and simple! If it's legalized do you really thing these people are going to stay home, do some dope and then go to sleep? It's why they had to change the wording of the law from DWI to DUI! Anything that alters our state of reality is dangerous, that's why I stay away from politics too! Man it's high up here on this soapbox
