It is fun to see how others can "see" the best pattern to capture for the form used. Looking forward to seeing the finished pieces, esp the Willow Creek. karock

I enjoy preforms as much, if not more, than the finished stone. I too like to see the design decision. The idea that someone captures when they draw the line here and not there, this shape and not that.

My wife is a painter with a degree in studio art. A few years ago she took a photgraphy class. We both went out and shot landscapes with BW film. This gave her twice as many negatives to work with. I always thought that I had a good eye for framing a scene. About half the prints she made were using my shots. Given the same slab, we consisently pick different shapes and scenes. My wife has an excellent eye and I keep trying to talk her into doing some cab design for me. When I have time I look though the cab boxes for possible shapes. Otherwise, I have 5 templates I work with and try to pick a shape that best utilizes the material and scenes on the slab.

That montana is really cool, looks like a twister. I've been doing mostly freeforms for the last year but am starting to use templates again so I can do matched sets of pendants and earrings. Amber has probably 50 or 60 different shapes in templates but I only use maybe 10 or 12. I'll look for the cabs.
