Any Lapis experts out there ? I have a 5/8th pound chunk of material that I'm reasonably sure is Lapis. The problem is, I've never seen Lapis in this deep of a blue color. It's a deep navy blue, almost black, with very little pyrite in it. The luster, streak and hardness are correct for Lapis. Has anyone heard of Lapis in this deep of a color ? Don

I'll see if I can get a pic out in the sunlight. I need better lighting for pics indoors. Tell your mom the pet wood park is still there. Don

This is old stock material that I inherited from a friend who's digging in that big rock pile in the sky. Nothing dyed about this stuff. I've just never seen lapis in this dark a shade. I polished a small portion of one end without loosing the deep color.

Dumortierite looks very similar to lapis but generally very dark. Some out here is even called "desert lapis" .

I have some dumortierite from the old Black Jack silver mine out near Amboy. Wrong hardness, streak and luster. also, lapis doesn't have the radiating fibrous look of dumortierite. The Black Jack tailings are a good source for thumbnail and micromount dumortierite crystals. Don
