First I want to say how much I've missed posting on this board! Been under the rock But this was my project for this weekend I was sceptical that I'd be able to cut this opalized ammonite lenghtwise free hand on the workforce. Success! I Use MK 225 blade and it worked great! Where I need help is with the flat lapping the faces. Eeek! I was at it for 2 hours trying different processes. Mostly hand lapping w/ silicon carbide sand paper on hard flat sufuce. Anyway they came out smooth and flat but I can't get a high lustre. O well ...its been a fun project. I bought the opalize ammonite from the Az Mining Museum. Enjoy & missya all Ed

Those are generally calcite replacement. Good luck getting a good polish. A lot of the "polished" fossils from Madagascar are lacquered.

Ed,
Its REALLY good to see you on here again. I love ammonite. However, I dont have any advice for polishing if you dont have a flat lap machine. However, if you ever need anything flat lapped you can send them to Dennis and I...we would be happy to polish them for you.

Ed! Good to see you back! Wish I had some advice for you. I've had a heck of a time trying to do flat surfaces with SiC.

Hey Ed. Good to see you around again. The local rock shop has a flat of those ammonites from Morocco. All of them were satin polished like yours then sealed with poly or lacquer. They look really good, hard to tell they are not polished.
