That bug is actually a shell of it's former self. Or, an exoskeleton that remains after a cicada nymph digs it's way out of the earth after years underground and begins it's new, but short life as a mating machine. What a way to go!

beautiful rocks and slabs you have there! I ran into one of those shells myself today with my hat. Didn't notice it until it fell off the tree and landed on the ground. Fran

Beautiful bunch of slab Carlos! Sure looks a lot like what I'm getting from the Eagle Pass gravel. I'm starting to see those cicada shells around here too and the racket at night is sometimes unreal....Mel

Those are some really cool looking rocks. Too bad we don't have railroad tracks with gravel around here!

Those are some really cool looking rocks. Too bad we don't have railroad tracks with gravel around here! I got started in the mineral hobby when I was ten years old. Started out by hunting sharks teeth in Fort Meade , Florida phosphate pits. I lived in lakeland , florida with no fossils around , except in the railroad tracks. It seems that the ballast used for gravel came from a limestone pit that had some shells and shark teeth. Take another look down at the tracks out your way Donnie, it's probably limestone gravel that may have fossils. That's some nice material Carlos !
