I'm often surprised by the color difference between the inside & outside color of a rock. The exterior can be changed so much by exposure to the elements over the eons that it eventually ends up looking so different from what it started out as. But, that's what saws are for!

That's why you need a good rock hammer/pick to chip a piece off to see what lies`within.

Oh yes, it did happen to me a few times. Your rock is still nice, though.

From a previous cutting session actually I have found many of this type of rock the 2 in this pic are examples it must be some sort of olivine in a silicon matrix what causes the rust color rind baffles me it certainly not rust nor oxidation that would require an iron ore as mentioned earlier some process of eons/ions anyway the material does take a pretty good polish thanks for looking E

Hey Ed, good to see you are still picking up rocks, it is amazing how weather and chemicals can really alter the outside of the rock, don't be a stranger!!!! Amber

Could there be iron in the water around those parts?

Ya know that a really good question Toad! I think you answered my quandary! Notorious hard water here! & it makes sense to me The water would adhere to the mineral like rust in pipes! thanks dude! Ed
