and poured forth a menagerie of hell upon the land. Abominations, demons, and monsters walked the earth. In the skies, strange beings sailed through the celestial heavens in ships unknown by man or god, sending down beams of pure energy across the terrain to scatter and frighten the native population. Bigfoot sightings, chupacabra video, and now Chinese UFO's!!!! buzz.yahoo.com/buzzlog/93848?fp=1It's the end times!!!! Repent repent!!!! ((or, more closer to the point, it's the fact that people love hearing about the strange and unusual rather than the mundane, and it's fun to wonder what the heck some unusual thing is...and it's kind of disappointing to learn the truth...Still, some weird headlines lately...) I'm going now...

Sands: I'm a believer too. Just too much evidence out there. It is a sad scientific fact though, that though folks from other planets can visit each other and observe from afar as it were, biologically, aliens really cannot land, at least not without a level three containment suit to avoid exposure to an alien biology. All this talk and Sci-fi writing about visiting other planets is just so much talk really. An organism must evolve within it's own biology to have resistance to the bacteria, fungi parasites etc within that biology. Otherwise, every microbe that's carbon based life form compatible would be all over you ( ie: War of the Worlds). If not carbon based, it might be a different story, but carbon based organic lifeforms are most probable so, in any new biology, it would be very dangerous to risk any kind of exposure. If it didn't infect and kill you there, who knows what you cold bring home. Just look at the Amerinds, isolated from European diseases for only a few thousand years, and they were decimated in only a few decades after being exposed to things like smallpox etc......Mel

My students always ask if I believe in ghosts, ufos, etc.
My response is this - I don't develop my belief from the media - especially TV. All the kids love Ghosthunters etc, and I tell them that they're buying into a show that HAS to find ghosts in order to succeed. I explain that the show's profit comes from advertisers and when more people watch the show, more money can be charged to put commercials with the show. People don't watch ghost shows where no ghosts show up. (Propaganda is a 6th grade standard - we also talk about the different kinds of persuasion used in ads.)
I tell them that they should base their opinions on their own experiences and the stories of people they trust. The best ghost (and mystery) stories I heard come from family and and friends and co-workers.
As for UFOs, sure I believe - U stands for 'unidentified' and not 'Alien'...

I have to agree with elementary. There's plenty of stuff out there we haven't identified yet, some we never will. We humans are all too good at taking fragments of information and turning them into things "we know". Supposed facts built from "theories" that don't even have enough evidence to support a decent hypothesis, with all opposing evidence ignored.
Unidentified simply means the viewer can't identify what they saw, nothing more.

Mel - Good story about current research on microbes. The new surveys are helping scientists understand the many ecosystems our bodies offer microbes. In the mouth alone, Dr. Relman estimates, there are between 500 and 1,000 species. “It hasn’t reached a plateau yet: the more people you look at, the more species you get,” he said. The mouth in turn is divided up into smaller ecosystems, like the tongue, the gums, the teeth. Each tooth—and even each side of each tooth—has a different combination of species.
Only 13 percent of the species on two people’s hands are the same. Only 17 percent of the species living on one person’s left hand also live on the right one.How Microbes Defend and Define Uswww.nytimes.com/2010/07/13/science/13micro.html?pagewanted=1&_r=1&sq=fecal%20transplant&st=cse&scp=1

It's also a prime example of your right hand not knowing what your left hand is doing....

Aren't your right and left hands touching each other all the time - at least when you wash them?

Rich: Ain't biology unbelievable and cool? Kind of yucky thinking of our bodies in terms of being a feeding ground and living place for scads of critters but then it's also kind of cool being "Planet Mel" or "Planet Rich" with our own little population of dependents that are are constant companions. Just goes to show you no man is ever really alone *L*.....Mel
