Hi, all. I am interested in buying some geodes that can be home cracked, smaller fossils that can be found (maybe) w/the crack of a hammer, fun stuff for junior high age kids with a high intelligence level and a low patience level. Documentation/information with the package would be a real plus, as well as any advice for further study etc.
You can PM me, or email me at tkhayes@chase3000.com.
Thanks a bunch!

Karen, there are lots of fossils to be found right there in Nebraska. And geodes to be found right across the border in Iowa. Why don't you get a copy of Midwest Gem, Fossil and Mineral Trails,Prairie States by June Culp Zeitner ? It's an excellent little book with lots of locations and maps. Any rock shop in Nebraska should carry it You'd be surprised how much patients kids can have when they're out in the field getting dirty. Don

Karen, you might also want to visit this site. snr.unl.edu/data/geologysoils/agates/agatedatabase.asp This is a University of Nebraska site with lots of information. It deals mainly with agates from all over the world, but you might find something there that would interest the kids. Don

I don't know how hard it would be, but it would be interesting as further research to try and figure out what kind of shark the teeth came from.

Thanks for the info, but unfortunately I am clear across the state from those fun places in Iowa (right across the border is about 400 miles ; ) for me), and I was trying to buy stuff to send to a friend in Minneapolis! I know we have great agates here in NE, just not in my part of the state. Bummer! Thanks, all! k
PS; any rock shop in NE is at least over 150 miles; I know there is one in Lincoln, and maybe Crawford?

Karen, are you near the Cheyenne River ? Many nice fossils have been found in the banks and gravel bars. And there are loads of agates and jasper in the same places. Actually, the banks and gravel in any of the rivers and streams are good places to look. Just keep a sharp eye out for rattle snakes. Don
