Here's one I found in my flower bed. He'll eventually be a full grown Monarch Butterfly. I have milkweed in my flower beds for them to feed on. Don

They sure are scary-looking critters at that stage, aren't they? I guess it keeps them from all being birdfood. Nice photo!

We had those in my backyard when I was growing up. They are big old worms.

Actually, it's the food they eat that prevents them from becoming bird food. At that stage of life they feed only on milkweed, which makes them poisonous to birds. The poison they eat stays with them as adult butterflies. Birds won't eat adult Monarchs either. Don
