Hi everyone,
I'm building a home made 12" saw and I was wondering if there is a formula for the diameter of the washers that hold a saw in place compared to the diameter of the saw blade?
I have heard of 2 different figures: 1/6 and 1/4 So for my 12" blade that would be either 2" or 3".
2" would give me < 5" cutting height 3" would give me < 4.5" cutting height
also, where can I purchase these flange washers for a 1/2" shaft?
thanks, ;D Dave

Howdy Dave, I was told 1:4 ratio My old 20 inch saw came with flanges that were too small and the blade was wobbling so I had to buy a set of 5" flanges from Diamond Pacific ( expensive too). Diamond Pacific should have whatever you need to buy....Mel

Kingsley North also has flange washers. Page 11, item 16. These washers are expensive, but are well worth the cost in saved blades. Most of the cost is in precision grinding of the washers, to make sure they are parallel on both sides. Don

I was told 1/6 by the owner of MK Diamond.

So if it is 1/6 then am I correct in assuming that a 12" blade needs a 2" flange washer, leaving 10" left over, divided by 2 (top & bottom) leaving 5" of cutting room, provided the flange washer is just below the cutting surface?

Saw designs vary as to arbor mounting, carriage, etc. My HP 24"cuts 9". Most 10"saw cut 3"-3.5". Add 1"more for 12 max. Covington carries a complete line of flanges but I don't know how competitive they are.

When you decide on the size of flange washers you need, let me know the inside and outside diameters you need. I have a box full of various sizes, and may be able to throw a couple in a padded envelope and send them to you. Don

Wow Don, thank you! I spoke to the tech at Covington and he said that their 12" saws have 2" flanges, so I guess I would like to go with two 2" diameter flanges for a 5/8" shaft. I would like to pay you for these, or if you are offering them out of generosity at least pay for the shipping and handling. My paypal address is JediLukas@comcast.net and you can send me a paypal request. Also, what would really help me out is if you can measure the total widths of these washers, because I am figuring out how much of my 1" or 3/4" shaft (haven't decided yet) is going to be reduced to 5/8" for the left/saw side. E-mail me and let me know (JediLukas@comcast.net) Thanks! Dave

Sorry Dave. I just checked all of my flange washers. Lots of 1/2", 3/4", and even a couple of 1". but no 5/8". Thought I'd be able to help you, but I guess not. Don

Yes, 5/8" are a little harder to fine.
Thank you again, Don. I appreciate you looking for me.

I know it's years later, but I am also building a saw, I am looking for OD 4" flanges. I could accommodate 5/8-1" bores using bushings. Thanks so much, totally understand if you don't have them anymore lol
