You liked them enough to buy them, that's all that counts. Looks like you've got atleast a few Gemmy pieces in there, so I guess the first thing you need to do is make your wife something really nice and then a couple to sell to make up for the purchase . Can't wait to see them all shined up! Dr Joe .

just don't let the opal get hot as you work it. it is very addictive chasing the fire in opal

Man, that's some nice fire in there! I agree with the Dr. Make the Mrs. a nice piece and don't worry about the cost.
Nate
BTW, I think it's a good deal. I paid $5.00 a gram for a piece I bought last year. Looks like you got a lot more than 16 grams in those jars.

Beautiful material! The jar on the left doesn't look like Australian material , though. It looks like Spencer Opal from Spencer, Idaho. The dull gray matrix, the nodule-like appearance of the Opal and the very thin layers of colors are characteristics of Spencer Opal. It is usually confined to use in making triplets. Spencer triplets are some of the most colorful cabs that you will ever see. Here are some photos of Spencer Triplets. Bob

We were recently at the Spencer Opal Mine and those jars do look just like the ones they were selling in the mine store. They were going for $35 at the store. Jo

I'm inclined to agree with bobby's assessment, especially the jar on the left I'd say that is 99% sure to be Spencer, but $80 is a pretty good price in any case, just a couple of nicely cut pieces should more than return the investment
