Gotta love the RR Buttes area. Wish I could make it out there more than once a year. Don

Some folks have all the luck. I'm trying to talk the wife into moving out to Rapid City after she retires. Don

Dang Roger, your finds always give me a major case of the drools. Bubblegums are one of my favorite agates ever and those are some beauties.....Mel

Hey ssexton, those are from the Buffalo Gap National Grasslands in S.W. South Dakota. Railroad Buttes is just one of many popular places to hunt for Fairburn, bubblegum, prairie, black and other types of agates, jasper, pet wood, cycads, marine fossils and occasional Indian artifacts. Don

Does the phrase "bubble gum" refer to a specific type of agate or does it refer to those small rounded agate nodules that look like they've folded over into themselves?

The " bubble gum " agates got their name from their outside appearance. Many look just like a piece of discarded bubble gum laying on the ground.
