Pretty basic stuff, but if it saves the life of just one blade . . . ;D Tough rock to get a good bite on. How it wants to sit in the vise. A couple of wedges in the back orient it better. Plus the rock is being grabbed in three places instead of one. Wedges under the top bar of the vise also help secure odd-shaped rocks.

Last step is to grab the rock with both hands and see if you can move it at all.

Anyone with a slab saw should have a box full of various wedges and shims. If they don't have, then they certainly should start collecting them. I save all off cuts from my table and miter saws. What can't be used as wedges makes kindling wood for the fireplace.
