My wife finally made me unpack my office and start the 2009 taxes (yes, I'm just a wee bit late) and look what I found! The coral looking thing came out of the creek behind my wife's mom's house in a creek where we constantly find that kind of stuff, along with geode's and indian arrowheads. Southern Indiana, about 45 minutes north of Louisville, KY. Anyway, not sure if it's coral or not, but wanted to see if something like that can be polished? It's been around for a while and the shiny parts are where just having it handled by bunches of kids has already smoothed a couple of sections. Would be a nice piece polished, but not sure if it will hold a shine like that. The other, well I used the quarter for size reference, I have no idea where that came from, didn't remember even having one so nice before coming here and joining this wild bunch. That's been in a box for about 10 years...

Horn coral is usually polished on ends or cut in discs and used as round cabs. Depending on where it is found it can be limestone or agate. I've got a`bunch of Brown County, TX stuff that is limestone but it polishes well. The better stuff is either red or black agate replacement.

I have a few of those snails too, that I found in Eastern Montana on my hunts.I will look up the proper name for it and get back to you. They are from the inner pod of a fossilized snail.

The colored fossil you have is called a "Nautilus",its from the Pierre Shale formation........... The other looks to be some sort of coral or a vertical snail.............
The nautilus is about 140,000,000 million years old......
