Howdy folks, Was out for a walk yesterday and made this cool find. Sadly this old blackbuck got himself tangled by a horn in a loose wire on a fence years ago. This why you don't hang old bailing wire from a fence. Throw it away so critters don't get tangled in it and die a slow death. Nothing left but this old bleached skull but it will look good on my shop wall.....Mel

tandl: Yep, we have around 300-400 free ranging here on the ranch. They're fairly endangered in their home range of India and Nepal but Texas has a large percentage of the world population. We ranch them as free ranging livestock and at intervals, thin the herds and sell of the big males for $800-$1000 a head and females as good eating meat. We also have Mouflon/Corsican sheep and Axis Deer but I've yet to find me a good skull from those......Mel

That's a cool find Mel. Around here the antlers (or are those horns?) get eaten up pretty quickly by rodents. I found a fork (white tail) buck skull in a swamp deer hunting several years ago. It has one antler on it yet, because it was stuck in the mud. The other side was chewed down to the skull. Thats on my garage wall too.

tandl: My dad was a taxidermist and I was the only kid in school who had to pick buckshot and bone fragments out of my bag lunches. I absolutely hate most wild game meat and couldn't bring myself to eat any of our antelope because they're all my buddies. Nate: Antelope have true horns rather than antlers. They just keep growing and are never shed. The blackbuck are really a sight to watch. They're one of the fastest antelope ( the cheetah is their normal predator) and can go about 45 mph plus they sproing making huge leaps about five foot high and maybe 30 feet or more long when they really get to rolling. Yet, oddly enough, they won't jump a four foot fence. Beautiful critters though. It's feeding time right now so here are a couple of pics of Elvis, He's semi-tame and has a harem of about 20 does he brings by twice a day. The does are tan and white with no black at all. The high fence is to keep the big critters off my porch *L*. Elvis' " What the heck do you want" look.

Rodney: Here in Texas, when you here a noise in the bush you really never know what'll come out. A few years ago some guy had an African Lion on his place. Folks around here have turned loose almost every form of big game for hunting and many kinds have naturalized. Was riding the other day on the neighboring ranch and came across a herd of Sabre Horned Oryx. Danged beautiful huge antelope almost extinct in North Africa. Not uncommon to see giraffes, eland, sika deer, zebra, wild ass, and many kinds of buffalo or bison. No telling what you'll run into, especially when exploring on horseback, because the critters don't run off when you're on a horse....Mel

Giraffes and zebras??? Holy crap!!! Not to sound like the Kansas farmboy that I am, but that has got to be a helluva surprise seeing something I would only expect in a zoo or on Nat'l Geo poking its head out of a tree...too cool!

Sounds like a beautiful place for a hike or ride Mel, much better than Cali? But I gotta say I certainly wouldn't venture out without a sidearm!

It's amazing driving through anywhere in the Texas hill country how many exotic animals you see on the ranches.
